Welcome to the Fishing Report.  Right now it is cloudy and not raining.  But it will, today, tonight and tomorrow.  One weather website predicts up to one inch today, possibly over two inches tonight and a half inch tomorrow.

Little River looks great.  I took the temperature at the swinging bridge.  The river was up about two inches than it was the same time yesterday.  The heavy rain kept coming our way yesterday but when the cells reached here they broke up and headed north along the spine of the Smokies.  I might have missed it but I didn’t see much rain at all on the North Carolina side.  Oconaluftee, Cataloochee and the Davidson are up some today but didn’t rise yesterday.  Tellico River is way up.  The Little Pigeon has remained steady and the flow is below normal.  We’ll see what happens next.

Fishing should be good today.  If we get an additional inch of rain or more the rivers will rise swiftly should the rain fall in that watershed.  Otherwise, this should be an excellent day.  The flow in Little River is slightly below normal but it is rising right now.  The water temperature in town was 60 degrees.  Perfect.

If you go try a Parachute Adams #14 or smaller, Stimulator #16, Neversink Caddis #16 and drop a small bead head nymph like a Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear or Tellico off the dry.  That would be a good place to start.  If that doesn’t work try nymphs.  It will be overcast so that is good.  The water has a little color to it, that’s good too.

But, if it starts raining hard somewhere in the Smokies there could be a sharp rise in the water level where you are fishing.  It might not be raining where you are but it could be further up in the watershed.  Be on the lookout for that.  We are officially under a flood watch through tomorrow.

The Little River Journal went out yesterday.  That is one large job that I am glad to be over with every month.  Lefty Kreh didn’t have a article in it.  He told me he was sending 8 articles.  I kept checking my e-mail.  Yesterday a CD showed up from him.  It was just barely too late.  I didn’t give him hardly any notice that I didn’t have an article.  I thought he had sent me two more but I couldn’t find them.  I’ve got plenty now.  Lefty is a great guy and friend.

How about the Kentucky Derby?  How about that long shot “Mine That Bird”?  That was the best Kentucky Derby I have ever seen.  Maybe in 1973 when Secretariat won, that could have been better.  Everyone loved Secretariat.

But Mine That Bird was not a favorite.  In fact his odds were 50 to 1.  This was the second largest upset in the history of the Derby.  This horse was bought by the owner for $9,500.  The trainer pulled a horse trailer 21 hours from New Mexico delivering that small, unknown gelding to Louisville for his big day.  He was ridden by a good jockey with a winning record.

When the opportunity to run fast, weave through the crowd and run for the wire presented itself, this horse had what it took, a great jockey, good legs, speed and determination.  There is hope for all of us.

Dang, what a great race.

Have a great day and thanks for being here with us.
