Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report from the Great Smoky Mountains. Light rain is falling this morning. The rain is welcome right now as we are about 3 inches below normal for rainfall. This has been a nice soaking rain....not too hard. In the rain gauge this morning there was 3/8 inches from the last 24 hours. Mixed rain is supposed to continue most of the day. This is the kind of rain you can fish in.

Water levels came up a little bit from yesterday. This morning the streamfly gauge is reading 1.80 feet or 192 c.f.s. This is still a little below the daily normal of 218 c.f.s. Water temperatures are great at 61.7F. A wader-clad couple was in this morning to get some flies. They had driven down the Little River from Gatlinburg and said the stream was still flowing clear. I expect the Middle Prong (Tremont) is starting to get murky. It always colors up before the other rivers.

Nymphs are going to be a good way to go if you are out fishing in the rain. Prince Nymphs, Copper Johns, Tellicos, Green Weenies, etc can all be good. Try some ant and beetle patterns too. The rain will be washing all sorts of stuff into the streams.

Dry fly patterns have been working well all week. Lighter colors are starting to get more productive. Elk Hair Caddis, Yellow or Orange Stimulators, Yellow Sally Patterns all in the #14 - #16 size range have been good.

Flow schedules look good on the area tailwaters. The Clinch is supposed to be off until 2pm today. The Holston is pulsing water. It looks like if you are willing to get a little wet the fishing possibilities are endless today.

We still have pleanty of space left in the Popper tying class with Anthony Hipps. This class is a bargain at $65. You will learn how to tie Anthony's Soft-Bodied Poppers. While not an advanced class, this class requires that you have a basic knowledge of fly tying techniques. All the tools and materials will be provided and even lunch. Please call us to reserve a spot. 865-448-9459.

Mother's Day is tomorrow. We will be open and here if Mom wants to come up and use that Gift Card you go for her.

If you head out to the river today bring a rain jacket. Keep an eye on water levels. If the streams starts to change clarity make sure you are on the road/trail side so you can get out. Water levels can rise rapidly so be watchful. Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
