Welcome to the Fishing Report. TroutFest is finally here!! Last night was the banquet and auction. From what I have heard it was a phenominal success. The Shop was crazy with people yesterday. Joe Humphreys was the first to arrive coming in on Thursday and fishing the Smokies with Walter Babb. Bob Clouser came through the door yesterday about midday and Lefty Kreh arrived later in the afternoon. Just come up to Townsend this weekend and you can get to meet them.
I sent Glenn Allgood up to check the river this morning. We got some rain here in Townsend last night but the rivers are still in good shape and are running clear. The weather report is calling for 100% chance of rain today. What does a forecast of 100% chance of rain really tell you. If it spits rain for 30 seconds then the forecast is correct. That's not really enough to stop a fishing trip though.
Don't let the weather forecast stop you from going to TroutFest. They have tents all over the place up there. Even if it is downpouring the show will go on.
If you are heading to the mountains to fish today, I'd have a good selection of nymphs such as BH Pheasant Tail, BH Prince and Tellico Nymphs. Copper Johns and hares ears are always good to have also. Dry flies have been working well. The Yellow Stoneflies are hatching. A yellow stimulator or Neversink Caddis works well. These bugs hatch later in the afternoon to evening.
Anytime there are forecasts for rain keep an eye on water levels. Freestone streams can rise rapidly. Even if it isn't raining where you are....it might have rained buckets upstream.
Water levels still look good despite the rain. Little River has been fishing well along the road between Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area and the Elkmont Campground as well as upstream along the Little River Trail. Middle Prong of Little River along the gravel road has been doing well. I haven't spoken to anyone that has been up and fishing Abrams Creek but I expect it to be fishing well also. The high elevation streams like Walker Camp Prong and Road Prong are fishing good for the brookies.
There is still today and tomorrow to take advantage of the Orvis Free Reel Deal. If you can't make it by the shop just give us a call!
I better get down stairs and help with the crowds. For a schedule of the Fly Tyers and the Events going on this weekend at TroutFest go to TroutFest.org
Thank you for taking time to read the fishing report this morning. We hope to see you at TroutFest!
