Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Welcome to the Fishing Report.  It is sunny and very comfortable outside this morning.  When I walked to my truck at home I heard a bird that I never heard before.  That has happened twice this year so far.  Little River looked beautiful and peaceful.  A man was sitting just downstream from the swinging bridge casting a spinner.  He looked relaxed and was tuned in to the water flowing by and the scenery.  I am jealous.  I’ll be in Knoxville most of the day visiting our printer and Allen at MCS our Apple dealer and guru. That will be fun but not as much fun as fishing.

The flow in Little River is 221 cubic feet per second (cfs).  Median flow for this date is 241 cfs.  The water is lower than normal which has been abnormal this year.  There is rain in the forecast on Friday.  The water temperature this morning was 60 degrees in town. The weather looks good today and tomorrow.  I’m hoping to go fishing tomorrow with Jack.

If you fish in the Park think about using a lighter tippet.  Try 5X.  Heck, try 6X if you are not catching trout.  The water isn’t really low but it is lower than we have been used to lately.  Yellow Sally stonefly or Light Cahill dry flies would be my choice, especially late in the day until dark.  I would probably tie on a #16 Yellow Sally and a #14 Light Cahill.  Other flies will work too.  There are a lot of bugs on the water.  You will do well with nymphs too.

I’ve seen some photos of nice brook trout lately.  The higher elevation brookie streams are fishing well.

If you lost a fly box at Troutfest and were sitting at Buzz Buffington’s table watching him tie shoot me an e-mail.  Buzz is holding your box for you.

We got some overstated revenue information from Troutfest.  It had to do with the credit cards at the banquet.  What I quoted yesterday was overstated.  We still made a bunch of money for the Park, just not as much as we thought.  We’ll have the correct number soon.

Mike and Jeff from Clinch River Outfitters came in yesterday.  On Monday they guided Bob Clouser and Frank Bryant on the upper Clinch River for smallmouth bass.  It sounded like they had a good day.  I’ve been friends with Bob Clouser for years but we’ve never fished together.  Randy Ratliff has guided him before.  Everyone says he is an excellent angler.  I’m not surprised.  Next year Joe Humphreys is going to stay a couple of days after Troutfest to fish with Jack Gregory and Ronnie Becker.  Even Joe will learn a few things from those guys.  They will learn from Joe too.

Did anyone watch Larry King last night?  The whole show was an interview with Mick Jagger.  It was great.  I’m a big stones fan and have been since high school.  What a talented bunch of guys.  If you want to watch a very short part of the interview CLICK HERE.

I better get going.  Lot to do today in the big city.

Thank you for being here with us.  Have a great day.
