Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina
Welcome to the Fishing Report from the Great Smoky Mountains. It is sunny and 55 degrees in Townsend this morning. I know, the National Weather Service is reporting 63 degrees. That reading is taken at the Knoxville Airport. It is 55 here.
Little River is flowing low at 60 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.34 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 124 cfs. We won’t see the river rise for at least 4 days. Rain is in the forecast Wednesday.
The water is cool though, 67.1 degrees at the “Y” right now. We’ve got some nice cool nights to look forward to this weekend. It is going to be very comfortable out there.
Fishing is good if you can get away from people. That’s not easy to do on the 4th of July weekend. Fishermen are doing well further from the masses. A nice hike above Elkmont might be the ticket. Wherever you go, the water is going to be low and the trout will be spooky. Use small dry flies or nymphs on light tippet. Stay well hidden. Keep your profile low. Concentrate on the shaded areas of streams with moving water. These fish are going to be hiding.
The crowds will diminish after tomorrow. Our town will be back to normal Summer activity.
I was locked in my office all day yesterday, working on this new online store. I usually check the cash register readings during the day remotely. I didn’t take the time yesterday. Actually, the day was over before I knew it. We were busy down there. Daniel told me the number after we closed and I couldn’t believe it.
The Park was busy too.
Last night, when I drove home, the streets were beginning to get active. People with their lawn chairs were lining up for the fireworks display. It’s a big deal here. People come from all around the region to the Townsend Fireworks Show. That and the Christmas Parade are popular, along with the Spring and Fall Festivals. People love to visit Townsend.
The campgrounds are having a big year. We’ve had great camping weather. Townsend is a great place to camp. We’ve got a beautiful river running through town and cool nights.
We have 7 students in our Beginner Day 1 class today and 6 in our Day 2 class tomorrow. Walter Babb and Rob Fightmaster will teach today at the store. Rob and Josh Pfeiffer will take the students into the Park tomorrow. I don’t know if we’ve ever scheduled classes on holiday weekends and I doubted these would be well attended. Wrong again!
They need me down stairs this morning so I better get going.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
