Welcome to the Fishing Report. It is actually Tuesday night. I started early because I’m going fishing at 6:30 am tomorrow morning with Jack Gregory. I brought the boat home from the store tonight and it is sitting in the driveway. I think Jack and I will go to Tellico Lake tomorrow. That means the Fishing Report will go up on our remote server around 5:00 am today.
I just called the Park Service road closing recording. The road between Elkmont and Metcalf Bottoms is still closed as of tonight because of the rock slide. You can check today by calling 865-436-1250. Hit the number “2” twice when prompted. They expected the road to be open by Monday. I think more rocks keep falling down when they remove the ones that have fallen. I was in a meeting today in Maryville and talked to Tommy Vaughn who owns Foothills Milling Company one of the finest restaurants in our county. He hiked to the rock slide from Metcalf Bottoms to take advantage of the lack of traffic and trout that had not seen a fly since Friday. The Park Service personnel finally stopped him near the slide for his safety.
Some of the information on the Fishing Report is not updated today because I’m fishing and Daniel is off. Sorry. It does not look like a great day for Jack and I. The weather forecast calls for “Thunderstorms likely” a 60% chance. And the chances get greater as the week goes by. But Jack and I like that kind of weather. We endured a tropical storm in Florida three years ago by choice. We wanted to see what it was like. That night the condo we were staying in rocked back and forth. A 4-foot storm surge hit the mainland where we were staying. At one point waves from the gulf were covering my truck as we drove through to get off the peninsula where we were staying. If I were you, I would not buy my truck when I decide to sell it. I’m hoping the airbags don’t decide to deploy at some point while I’m driving. I think it is safe.
Fishing in the Park is good, especially in the upper elevations. Use terrestrial patterns and of course the Green Weenie. Flows in the streams are probably going to be unstable over the next few days but you never know. We’ll have to wait and see. It is going to be cooler and I’m ready for that.
I spent some time today in a small business round table meeting with 16 small business owners from our county and Bill Haslam who is running for governor. I try my best to keep politics out of the Fishing Report. I’m going to vote and work for him. He is a Republican. Our current governor is a Democrat. I voted for him. I cross party lines and vote for who I think will do the best job. I like Bill and I think from what I’ve seen he is the best choice so far for running our State. He is the Mayor of Knoxville and his record there and as a business manager is impressive.
Another asset in his campaign and his life is his wife Crissy. I sat next to her in the meeting. There were four members of the press standing next to her. She does a great job supporting the campaign especially in the videos and in person. I think she will be a extraordinary first lady. One thing that really impressed me is she visited our website yesterday morning. She liked it and she said her brother is a fly fisherman. Now, I don’t know if she Googled me knowing I was one of the participants in the round table meeting or by chance she was looking for some fly fishing tackle for her brother. But, I was flattered that she visited our site. We had a good time talking. They have my support.
Another thing I liked about Chrissy, I believe she would make sure our Governor supported Troutfest. She has quite a lot of her own personal non-profit projects that she supports. We tried to get our current Governor to attend Troutfest but we were turned down. I believe our Governor should attend Troutfest.
I’m going to have a great day of fishing today whether we catch anything or not. I just like being with Jack. He is the best fly fisherman I have ever known and I know plenty of them. But, more important than that he is my buddy and I love him. We will fish together for the rest of our lives as often as possible.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
