Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report. Clouds blanket the sky here in Townsend. The weather forecast is once again calling for a chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. A high of 82F?? It most definitely doesn't feel like August. I'm not in ANY way complaining. I would much rather it be in the 80's than the 100's.

Smokies streams are in excellent shape. The water temperature this morning is reading 65.2 F at the gauge. The flow is 2.01 feet or 211 cf.s. This is higher than the normal for this date of 119 c.f.s. For perspective, back in 2007 the Little River was, I can't even really say flowing, at a level of 23 c.f.s.

Fishing should very good in the Smokies today. I would start with a dry fly, my favorite being a Stimulator. Running a Green Weenie, Barbie Bug or other small nymph off the back is a great way to go. Other good dries have been the Neversink Caddis, Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Adams, Thunderheads, etc.

It has been slow this week here at the Shop. School is back in session for most people. As a result you won't have to fight the crowds for a spot on the river.

One thing that must be an issue...that I never figured would be an issue to worry about.. it time to start and stop fishing. The fishing regulations for Great Smoky Mountains National Park states "Fishing is allowed from a half hour before official sunrise to a half hour after official sunset." I always figured if you could see to tie a fly on I was good to go. Just recently I've heard from two people who were spoken to by Park rangers about fishing times. One was on the early side of things but was given the impression by the ranger that he should finish up his fishing and head out.
I don't want to give any kind of impression that I don't appreciate what the rangers have to deal with. And like other forms of law enforcement I know that they are way underpaid for the duties of their jobs. I just never thought about fishing start and stop times as a major concern. I'll be keeping a better track of what "official" sunset is in the future.

In celebrity gossip news.... Orvis has posted on their Facebook page a few snippets of interviews from the Jimmy Kimmel Show. Ashton Kutcher showed up wearing an Orvis Trout Bum cap and Julia Louis-Dreyfus brought whitefish and trout pictures from trip to Montana. Kimmel is an avid fly fisher. We sold him a fishing license once. Nobody in the Shop made any kind of a deal about it. He was just another angler going on a guide trip. (Hopefully he appreciated that). Hollywood stars like their causes....maybe we can get some big names thinking about dam removals and keeping rivers polution free.

Byron is going to log on this afternoon after fishing, read all this and be like... oh what has Daniel been writing. Maybe a bit too much coffee this morning.

The radar looks good right now but there is rain out to the west. If you hit the stream keep an eye on water levels. Be sure not to stay out too late too. Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
