Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Welcome to the Fishing Report. The clouds are heavy this morning in Townsend but blue skies are trying to break through. I drove through rain on the way into work this morning. Nothing heavy, but still nice to see. The rain gauge here at the Shop had 0.15" in it. Weather forecasts are calling for rain each day for the next little while. From what I could tell from reading the reports it is supposed to be isolated showers. Saturday is supposed to clear up and be dry. Rain would definitely be appreciated.
Water levels are just below normal coming in at 74cfs or 1.49 feet on the gauge. The Little River was flowing clear here in Townsend when I stopped to get the water temperature. The temp was 64F.
Cloudy and overcast days can make for some very good fishing. The trout are more likely to be out prowling around. Some of the trees are already starting to change color and drop leaves. As we go into Fall it is important to be extra careful when going up and down the river banks. Wet leaves don't give very good traction. Frosted leaves give even less traction.
Fishing today in the Smokies should be pretty good. Water levels are on the rise but shouldn't get to high. People have been seeing some Isonychia up on Little River. A Parachute Adams in a #12-#14 is an excellent pattern for this. elk hair caddis have also been working well. Don't forget about the beetles and ants. As leaves start falling, terriestrial insects are bound to fall into the water and become food.
It is pre-season ordering time of year here. We (mostly Byron this year) get to figure out ahead of time what items we are going to order for next year. To me it is fun and stressful at the same time. As we are getting ready for the coming season we have been looking at sales records for everything we sell. Some items just don't pay for their spot on the wall and won't get re-ordered. There will be some changes. Hopefully all for the better.
There is only chances of rain the next several days so don't let that keep you from hitting the stream.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
