Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Welcome to the Fishing Report. It is another absolutely gorgeous Fall morning here in Townsend. The sky is bright and clear. You can't hardly beat this weather and it looks like it is going to last through the weekend.

All of this sunshine should warm water temps a bit making the trout even more active. This morning the water was 54F here in Townsend. The water is low and clear. Water flow was 1.33 feet on the gauge or 48 cfs. Average flow is 71cfs so we are below normal. The water is very clear so be stealthy.

Fishing in the Smokies has been good. Colder temps and shortening days have gotten the browns moving around more. Across the map fishing is improving. If you want to head up to the high elevations to find some brook trout in their Fall splendor try mid day and afternoons. Give the water a chance to warm up some. Low temps in the high elevations have been in the low 30's at night. This is really going to cool the water and make the trout more sluggish.

Heading out early in the day I would start with nymphs. Pheasant Tails, Prince Nymphs, Tellico, Hares Eears and Copper Johns are all good choices in the #14-#16 size range. As the day warms dry patterns will be good producers. Orange and Yellow stimulators, Orange Neversink Caddis, Orange Palmers, Elk Hair Caddis and Parachute Adams should be good in sizes from #14-#16.

TWRA stocked some fish in Little River through Townsend this week. I looked off the Swinging Bridge this morning and spotted a nice 10-12" rainbow swinging amongst the rocks.

Fishing in the Smokies should be improving each day this week. It could be an excellent weekend. If you get the chance head out there.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
