Townsend, Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Welcome to the Fishing Report.  It feels like Spring in Townsend, Tennessee this morning.  Right now, at 9:00 am, it is 56 degrees.  I talked to Steve Filmore at the swinging bridge for at least 30 minutes earlier, wearing a long sleeve shirt and no jacket or vest.  The sun is bright and it feels good outside.

Little River looked perfect for fly fishing.  The water temperature was 50 degrees at 8:00 am.  Flow is 357 cubic feet per second, like it would be on a fairly typical Spring day.  Median flow for this date is 154 cfs.  The temperature today will be around 70 degrees.  The water will continue to warm like it did last night.

Fishing is OK.  Josh Pfeiffer stopped by last night to drop off some clients he guided.  The water was cold yesterday and he said the fish they did catch were right on the bottom.  If you didn’t get those nymphs down, the trout would not take them.  He said almost all the fish they caught were on a dropper behind another nymph.

As the water warms this afternoon fishing will get better.  This is a perfect day to fish in the Park.  I wish I could go.

Start with nymphs, weighted and ticking the bottom.  Set the hook when something feels funny.  It could be a trout or it could be a rock.  You might get some surface activity.  I would have some Blue Wing Olive and Parachute Adams dry flies in my box.  For nymphs I would use a Tellico or Bead Head Pheasant Tail.

Try not to wade through the redds.  Brown trout are spawning or they have finished depending on where you are.  The high water this week might have done enough damage to the brown’s hard work so try not to make it worse by stepping in a nest.

We are holding a full committee meeting for Troutfest this afternoon.  It starts at 2:00 in our classroom.  We should have over 20 committee members attending.  Bill Guinn, our Chairman has done a great job getting things going earlier than usual.  Though we usually met in November when I was chairman, a lot of smaller sub-committees have met over the Summer and Fall and work is getting done.  I serve on the Finance and Marketing Committees.

I’m not sure who the celebrities will be next year except I do know that Lefty Kreh will return.  There have been a lot of other names floating around out there.  Two are people I have never met.

Buzz Buffington, Dick Geiger and I will meet again Tuesday and continue working on the Clinch River Chapter fly tying book.  I think we’ll finish by that evening.  We spent a full day on the book last week.  Buzz ties, Dick is doing the photography and I’m pulling the text and photos into a printable format.  The book will be printed in full color.  It will be used in the CRC fly tying class this winter and they will be sold too.  This has been a lot of fun.  They are great guys to work with.

I’m starting an overhaul of our entire website.  I can see new trends from some of the best sites on the internet.  Some of my favorites are Apple, Patagonia, Chevrolet and Porsche.  “I don’t own a Porsche at the moment”.  I wish I did so that’s why I know about the Porsche site.  Mine would be this one:  CLICK HERE

Where to they put the trailer hitch?

Many new sites incorporate images that slide from left to right.  You will see that on the Apple and Chevy sites.  I downloaded the software yesterday to do that.  Now I have to learn how to use it.  I’ve got a lot of photography to do.  New items need to be added to the online store.  I’m starting on the Fishpond store tomorrow.  Somehow I lost the instructions to download their images from the FTP site.  I’ll call Jordan, the sales manager tomorrow and get the password and instructions.  They do a great job with their photography, it fits well with our style so I just use their images.  That will save me about a week’s worth of work.

I have a few pages left to read then the Steve Jobs biography will be finished for me.  This is the best book I have read in years, maybe in my life.  Most of my hero’s are business innovators and to me he topped most in my lifetime.  Steve Jobs changed the world.

Go fishing today.  I wish I could.

Have a great one and thank you for being here with us.
