Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina
Welcome to the Fishing Report. I left the house at 7:45 and the temperature was 60 degrees. It is also very windy. Rain has begun to fall. What a nasty day it is in Townsend. There is more news. It may snow tonight and the temperature is likely to drop to 28 degrees.
And here’s what the National Weather Service has to say about the wind:
EVENT...STRONG SOUTHERLY WINDS OF 30 TO 40 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH...ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP OVER THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING COLD FRONT. CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR THE FORMATION OF DAMAGING WINDS IN THE FOOTHILLS. WINDS WILL SWITCH TO THE WEST TO NORTHWEST TONIGHT AND DECREASE SLIGHTLY TO 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO AROUND 40 MPH FOR TONIGHT AND FRIDAY.
I don’t think we need to go fishing today. It will be dangerous to be in the forest. This is my day off this week and I’m going to work here all day.
Little River is still flowing above normal at 244 cubic feet per second (cfs). Median flow for this date is 220 cfs. The water temperature is 46 degrees. Fishing today would probably be pretty good if you didn’t have trees and limbs falling on you. Don’t take the chance. Tie flies or take a nap.
Here is a story in the Daily Times about the covered bridge we are trying to get funding for. CLICK HERE. My buddy Mike Talley, who is our new Mayor is pushing this project through as far as he can. The County Commission needs to come up with about $57,000 and they are meeting tonight. I planned to be there and speak. We have a website crisis. Daniel and I will spend all day working on it using two computers. That’s why I’m here on my day off. I worked on this problem all day yesterday. I’ll probably be too tired to make that meeting tonight. Daniel and I will not be taking phone calls today. Paula and Bill will be here to help you.
We will most likely wake up tomorrow morning with white mountains. That is one of the nice things about living here. The streets can be wet with rain in the valley, but the mountains get hammered with snow at the same time. We can drive around easily most of the time but still look at those snow covered mountains all day long.
The wind is getting very strong right now. Crows are flying around the field outside my window or they are trying to fly. I hope the power doesn’t go out. We have a deadline tonight on this website and should that happen, we would have to move somewhere for the day that has power and an internet connection.
I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. Maybe I can have a pretty picture of the Smokies for you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
