Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

Welcome to the Fishing Report from the Great Smoky Mountains. It is a cold wintery morning here in Townsend. At least the sun is shining so it doesn't feel as cold. The high today is supposed to be 50F and tomorrow even a little warmer.

Water levels on the Little River are still a bit high at 2.67 feet or 474 c.f.s. This is higher than the average flow for today of 267 c.f.s. Water temps are still cold too. This morning the gauge is giving a reading of 40.5 F.

Christmas has come and gone. For a holiday with a set date it always sneaks up on me. That is probably because I tend to be a procrastinator and don't plan very far ahead. All in all in turned out to be a good Christmas. Now on to New Years.

We don't have anything on the events schedule for this weekend. The week between Christmas and New Years can be a busy time in Townsend and Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. A lot of people travel to the Smokies for Christmas. They will have Christmas money and gift certificates to spend. After this week Townsend will be almost like a ghost town. Around here it will be very quiet during the week as we work on getting ready for Spring. Weekends are busy though. Our Free Fly Tying Demos on Saturday really get going. Our Fly Tying Classes also continue. Fly tying is a good Winter activity. It helps get you ready for Spring fishing.

Fishing is going to be tough over the next couple of days. I guess it really could be classifies as Ok for Winter time fishing. It all depends on how you want to compare it. Water temps are still cold. Nymphs are going to be the best bet. Prince Nymphs, Copper Johns, Hares Ear Nymphs, etc with extra weight added to get them down. Look for sunnier parts of the river where the water has had a chance to warm. Afternoons will fish better than the morning.

Water levels are still a little high so be careful wading. Falling in this time of year is something you don't want to do.

I've had several days off this week with how Christmas and my day off fell so I have a lot of work to catch up on. Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
