I am seeking info on a south bend cane rod. All I can find on the rod is South Bend 346-8 1/2'. It has a red uplocking reel seat. On the rod tube I can make out Bass Action, Montague. What year was it made? It looks to be in good shape. needs some work on one ferrel.

The Model 346 is a dry-fly-action rod. It was second from the top (model 323) in the era of single-built South Bend fly rods. The 8 ½ ft is a desirable length and you certainly can use it for trout, although it is going to feel quite heavy if you are used to graphite. It’s most likely to work best with a 6 weight line and would be a fun rod for bass. Obviously, the tube is not correct for this rod, so disregard its description. Take a look at the decal. Oval is older, followed by rectangular with inked on length and line weight, latest long narrow double decals. Your rod is probably post WWII to early 1950's. You have a potentially nice rod. Enjoy.
