View Full Version : Ain't been fishing enough

05-11-2015, 09:05 PM
Ain't has a long history of controversy. It first appeared in 1778, evolving from an earlier ain't, which arose almost a century earlier as a contraction of are not and am not. In fact, ain't arose at the tail end of an era that saw the introduction of a number of our most common contractions, including don't and won't. But while don't and won't eventually became accepted at all levels of speech and writing, ain't was to receive a barrage of criticism in the 19th century for having no set sequence of words from which it can be contracted and for being a "vulgarism," that is, a term used by the lower classes, although an't had been originally used by the upper classes as well. At the same time ain't's uses were multiplying to include has not, have not, and is not, by influence of forms like ha'n't and i'n't. It may be that these extended uses helped fuel the negative reaction. Whatever the case, criticism of ain't by usage commentators and teachers has not subsided, and the use of ain't is often regarded as a sign of ignorance. · But despite all the attempts to ban it, ain't continues to enjoy extensive use in speech. Even educated and upper-class speakers see no substitute in folksy expressions such as Say it ain't so and You ain't seen nothin' yet. · The stigmatization of ain't leaves us with no happy alternative for use in first-person questions. The widely used aren't I?, though irregular, was found acceptable for use in speech by a majority of the Usage Panel as long ago as 1964, but in writing there is no acceptable substitute for the stilted am I not?

It's been so long since I've posted a fishing report I'm starting to feel like the guy that is full of comments but has no proof to back them up. My first love of the outdoors is hunting, and as long as I can be in the woods with a bow or gun, that's where I'll be. This year's turkey season has been a long but fun one for me. Although, I didn't kill one, I had the best season for as long as I can remember. There is one more week left for me to hunt them, but I've had enough fun for the year.

Sunday morning, I decided to sleep in late for a weekend (6:30 as compared to 4:00) and hit a part of the park I haven't been for awhile. I made a quick stop at McD's and was on the road. Another stop at McD's in Gatlinburg for a new coffee and I was almost there. I'd gotten a little later start than I wanted and just knew that there would be someone fishing in front of me.

Unfounded worry. I was the first in the parking lot. Yep, that's my Fahrvergnügen.

I should have taken a selfie here. I hear that is the thing to do nowdays. ;)

Last time I was here, JRoss and I were standing in the stream and a just-married couple was getting their pictures made from here. Today, I'm on the bridge and no one is in the stream. Just the way I like it.

I've been trying to expand my foraging abilities and this stuff was growing everywhere. I thought about picking a bag of it to add to a salad. Does anyone know what it is?

Although no one was out, I still decided to hike a ways in and stretch the legs. This looks like a good spot to hop in.

Yep, this is what I came for.

This fish made me think of Brokeback Mtn, so I named him Hank.

After fishing up the stream for awhile, I had finally cleared my mind of work and them dang turkeys. I'd gotten to thinking about the more important things in life, like what keeps gravity and erosion from just bringing the mountain down overnight. My mind was quickly at ease when I realized the Park Service had taken proper precautions. Good thing they chained his rock down. I'm at complete ease now.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/5-10-15/P1010872_zpsarvqe5mj.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/5-10-15/P1010872_zpsarvqe5mj.jpg.html)

Sometimes I never feel as though my flies are big enough. Back to the vise.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/5-10-15/P1010870_zpsy0dt68dk.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/5-10-15/P1010870_zpsy0dt68dk.jpg.html)

After fishing for a few hours, I'd eaten all my snacks and started to get real hungry. I'd already caught a boatload of these,

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/5-10-15/P1010866_zpsotqzsdnz.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/5-10-15/P1010866_zpsotqzsdnz.jpg.html)

So, a quick hike out and I was headed back to McD's. I probably hadn't eaten McD's three times all last year and here I am hitting it up three times in a day.

After filling myself with 2 years worth of trans fat, I still felt like fishing a bit.

I decided I'd hit a few roadside spots on my way back towards Maryville. This looks like it could be good for a few casts.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/5-10-15/P1010873_zpsyyefnxbz.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/5-10-15/P1010873_zpsyyefnxbz.jpg.html)

Plenty of these were to be had.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/5-10-15/P1010876_zpstnutmzwm.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/5-10-15/P1010876_zpstnutmzwm.jpg.html)

It wasn't long before I was simply wore out from a long winter and spring and needed some simple arse on couch time. I caught a few more of these.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/5-10-15/P1010875_zpsnvkhlm5u.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/5-10-15/P1010875_zpsnvkhlm5u.jpg.html)

And headed home.

That folks, is why I Fly Fish

I like your style Buzz, and Hank, poor Hank....something about that fish just ain't right.

Nice report!

Nice post Buzz:biggrin:

I never understood why when a research project is done they don't remove all traces. Maybe they keep it there for future projects or something:confused:

And why you went back to McD's when all that lovely salad greens are growing everywhere. Put the branch lettuce or ramps aside and dig in to the real feast

Nice post Buzz. I saved it so we can make it one of our first posts on www.****buzzdoes.com.

Great report and pics, unfortunately I wollered all in that salad yesterday. No ill effects just yet

This isn't going to be as much of a fishing trip as me showing off the old fishing dog. So, if you hate dogs, please discontinue reading.

I've bitten off a little more than I can chew with work and have spent the last 3 weeks or so trying to keep my head above water. I haven't even really had the spare time to check in on the board to see how the fishing has been going. My wife drug me to her parents place in Lawrenceburg this past weekend. I knew I could use the time away from a desk and computer, not to mention they have a pond out the front door and deer woods out the back.

Well, I fished a bunch. It's either that, or watch Nascar. And not just the race, but practice and qualifying too.

First fish. Ducky, don't shoot the messenger, I didn't write the rules.... Oh wait, I may have.............

I didn't catch many big fish this trip. They are in here, I just didn't catch many. But, I had the turd burglar trying to help retrieve every one of them.

My in-laws already think I'm a little weird, so I don't get caught taking too many pictures of fish. "Fish are for eating, not looking at"

That's it. A pretty relaxing, fun get away. Back to the grindstone. Hoping to get my head above water before the end of the month.

I gave up trying to keep my head above water at work a long time ago. Now I just add extensions to my snorkle. I figure as long as I can keep the waves of $#!+ from lapping over the intake, I'll be OK. That, and dreaming of retirement, is all that keeps me going sometimes.

But looks like you had a good get away, at least for a little while. Maybe I need to get me one of those 4-legged fish retrievers. Do they work on snagged flies as well?

Nice post Buzz:biggrin:

And why you went back to McD's when all that lovely salad greens are growing everywhere. Put the branch lettuce or ramps aside and dig in to the real feast

So that is why you kept pointing out those wonderful leafy greens every time we passed them, aye Ducky?

Thanks for the posts and pictures Buzz, it will help a bit sitting at my computer all day.

I made it out again today. ChemE and I have been trying to get together and fish some. We'd spent the past week texting back and forth trying to coordinate a day we could both slip out of work and have favorable generation schedules. After a few days of texts, we decided to hit a tailwater just north of Knox County around noon today. They weren't scheduled to turn on the juice until 3 which would give us about 3 hours to fish. Other than a few folks fishing off the dam and a college kids named Thomas, there was no one fishing.

I've been trying to organize some fly boxes and get rid of 10 years of tying flies that I'll never use in a million years. But, the project was incomplete. So, instead of having 3 fly boxes of mostly junk and some flies I actually use, I had 3 boxes of junk and 2 incomplete boxes of flies I've actually used within the past 2 years. Well, I'd thrown these boxes as well as a pair of waders and boots with 2 fly rods and 2 boxes of miscellaneous stuff into the fahrvergnügen last night. I was about as unprepared as I could be and didn't want to forget something.

I arrived before ChemE and was just getting ready to head to our prearranged meeting spot when he pulled in the parking lot. I waited while he threw on his waders and we headed down river. We got on the river and I started catching fish immediately. All rainbow stockers. I guess I've gotten spoiled with what the slot restrictions have done to the river, but I don't really want to catch typical stockers. Today was not a day to complain it about it though. It's all I caught. ChemE did catch a nice slot fish, but didn't bring a camera, so it's up to you if you want to believe him or not. Well, onto the pictures.

Not the first fish. I just have a hard time taking pictures of stockers and broke my own rule. The first fish was straight out of the truck and it was obvious, no fins and bloody tail. This fish did ask to have its picture made.

It got ate.

ChemE is fishing just upstream of me. Catching less. He has no pictures, so he can't prove me wrong.

Fly of choice. Didn't see the first sulphur come off today.

I was going to take a picture of the smoke rolling out of the smoker, but a sudden storm blew up over south Maryville and I was left drinking beer in the garage.

It sure felt good to get out and spend some time with cold feet. Better than anything the doctor could have ordered.

Great post, thanks. Storms have been moving in weird directions here lately

They sure are. Last night's storm came out of the southeast.

As you said, I have no pictures so cannot really add much to this post. Although that 19.5" brook trout I caught was a pretty specimen, sure wish I had my camera with me. Also, all 58 fish caught today were caught on a size 8 stonefly nymph, those stockers on the Clinch love that fly!

In all seriousness, it was very nice to get out on the water and spend time with good company. We had a blast just chatting a making jokes while fishing, something that is pretty difficult to do in park due to the noise and how far apart we usually are. Also, I discovered that I was completely out of 6X fluoro, and 7X doesn't respond kindly to 60' drifts and fish that like to wrap you around logs... Thankfully, I was able to wrangle my 15" slot rainbow in during one of those extremely long downstream drifts, although I did have a few break me off. Regardless, I kept two trout to grill for my son, and I was able to enjoy the fact that I am not in Saudi Arabia this week (which is where I was scheduled to be), so I consider this trip to be a huge success.

06-07-2015, 08:29 PM
I may still fish it a few times during the week or during non-peak tourist season.

So, I lied. I'm a fisherman, It's up to you on whether you want to believe everything I say or post.

I'll start this off by saying "excuse the crappy photo's". My wife is in Iceland with a bunch of her knitting friends and she has the good cameras. All I was left with is a cheap point and shoot that I use for work.

I had every intention on doing some work around the house today and surprising my wife when she returns with the completion of a major project that I have been promising to do for years. This year was going to be to paint the retaining wall. We've got two big retaining walls in our front yard and they look pretty ragged. I've been meaning to powerwash them and paint them for years. I actually accomplished powerwashing them yesterday, but had decided it was simply too hot to fool with today. So, I went fishing.

I threw my usual Smokies gear in the car and headed out. I wasn't sure where I was headed, but since I'd gotten off to a late start, I knew I wasn't going through Gatlinburg. I eventually found myself at the end of a road and decided to head up. Along the way, I passed this awesome cascade.
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020845_zpsmygtidgz.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020845_zpsmygtidgz.jpg.html)

I remember waiting out a thunderstorm under this several/many years ago.
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020846_zpsyesba0m6.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020846_zpsyesba0m6.jpg.html)

I normally use the hiking function on Runkeeper to keep track of my mileage while hiking (and running) but it wasn't functioning for me this morning. So, I hiked roughly 2.5-3 miles from the trailhead and jumped in.
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020849_zpsu3ympmkv.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020849_zpsu3ympmkv.jpg.html)

On the first cast.
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020848_zpsxwlg5bhv.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020848_zpsxwlg5bhv.jpg.html)

I hopped up to the next pool and would you know it.....wet boot prints. There were only 5 vehicles at the trailhead and one was hooked to a horse trailer. I passed a couple fishermen just above the cascade. How could I chose to hop in at the exact place someone else did? Oh well. I didn't fret, I climbed out and went a good ways above them. I gave them and myself a good ways to have clean water.

It wasn't long before I was back to catching fish.
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020869_zpsbzwo6c1a.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020869_zpsbzwo6c1a.jpg.html)

I was having some issues casting. Every now and then, I didn't feel like my rod would load and I was getting frustrated. I actually felt like the line was wrapped around the end of the rod, but everytime I looked, it was fine. I went to check to see that all the sections were joined correctly and found the problem.
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020852_zpsvjuulrhd.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020852_zpsvjuulrhd.jpg.html)

How in the world does someone miss an eye while lining a rod!?!

Once I had it figured out, I was back in business.

I flipped over a few rocks to see what the fish had to eat. I'm not sure why they were interested in this.

When these would have given them a whole meal. Seriously, I'm not sure why I don't fish more big nymphs.
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020855_zpsmbf2bayg.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020855_zpsmbf2bayg.jpg.html)

That thing could easily fit in this fish's mouth.
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020871_zpsrpyuw2pn.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020871_zpsrpyuw2pn.jpg.html)

If I fish nymphs, they are typically a size 16. They catch fish, so I fish them. All the real nymphs I saw today were 12+. I know the fish eat them. Why don't I fish them? I'll be at the vise some this week.
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u51/buzzmcmanus/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020874_zpssgfvwco1.jpg (http://s165.photobucket.com/user/buzzmcmanus/media/2015%20Fishing/6-7-15/P1020874_zpssgfvwco1.jpg.html)

All in all it was a great day fishing.

Nice brooks, hard to beat a caddis in the smokies. Nice job on packing light too, that has to make it easy

I really hadn't been able to get out and fish for myself for a few weeks. It's tourist season and it just seamed as though I had an old friend and their family in town the past couple weeks. Don't get me wrong, I made it out fishing, but most of my time was spend trying to get a buddy or his wife/kid their first mountain trout. I even managed to get a few to catch their first native trout. I don't see how you guides do it. You truly must love what you do. There were several times I just wanted to leave everyone on the stream and run off to fish by myself.

Well, I finally had the chance to do that Sunday. On Saturday we finally got some decent rain and I watched the flow chart spike up almost a foot before Sunday morning, so I was headed to the Park for sure. I got out of the house early, however not as early as I had wanted, but I was still early enough to watch the sun rise. The river wasn't near as high as I was wanting it to be and it was still running clear when I would have liked it to have some color. But..... fishing was still good and I caught more than I expected. I did have one really nice fish break me off. The break off was probably more operator error than anything, which makes it more frustrating than ever. I chronically retie my flies while fishing, but it was late in the morning, I'd sort of given up and hadn't retied after snagging several rock and trees. Lesson learned.

Oh well, enough of the words. I'll let the pictures tell the story from here on out. Sorry for the crappy pictures. My wife took my preferred camera with her to Iceland. She's home now, so the pictures will be better next go around.

I feel like I need to piggyback on this thread buzz.
I've actually fished more this year than the last 3-4 years, but still don't feel like I get out enough.

Jump on in. You've always posted solid content.
I've also squeezed out more trips to the water than the past several years, but still feel like I need to try and get a few more days in.

I feel like I'm on the John Boy and Billy Show. I'd like to give a shout out to Dan Munger and all the posters that posted on the Hornet Thread. I was completely unable to relax and enjoy my morning fishing today. I sometimes get wound a little tight while hiking in while it's still dark, it seams that there are lots of things that go bump in the dark. Once I'm on the stream, it all calms down. Not today. I spent the entire morning looking in the trees and watching my backcasts for hornets nests.

I'd also like to give a shout out to the couple of guys that high holed me. I can't believe the number of people that were fishing that far in today. Granted, I wasn't a long ways, but judging by the last couple times fishing the 2-4 mile range is the busiest sections of the stream. I tried to get upset about the high-holers, but I realize that they were probably tourists and only get to fish in the park a couple times a year; while I can head up about anytime I want. I truly hope they had a good day.

On to the pics. This is what you want to see anyways.

I caught plenty of nice rainbows. Once the sun came over the tops of the mountains, the bite really slowed down.

Immediatelly after getting high-holed, I headed upstream another mile before fishing again. Two holes later, I was rewarded with this brown. It made the sting feel a little better.

As I was walking out, staring in the trees for hornets nests, I stumbled upon this sow with three cubs. Sorry I didn't get better pictures of them. They were too close for comfort, coming at me, and not afraid of humans. I found a side trail, dropped down to the stream and made my way around them and back to the trail head. I also saw another sow with just one cub while fishing. They didn't even realize I was in the stream. 6 bears for the day.

Seems like a productive day even with the high holers. Mind if i ask what fly that is that you are using? It looks very interesting.

Ain't been fishing at all. A quick trip to Arizona and back; and I had to clean off my tying table and turn it into my butchering table.

Nice post Buzz. How many times has someone asked "Been fishin lately?". My reply is usually, "Not enough". This reply is a repeating theme for me until I retire and then I'll probably have other stuff to do. When I fish in the park I don't care about size or big numbers of fish but I do hate getting skunked. This year I only fished the park half dozen times and quit fishing when the water was down. I just enjoyed being there with life all around me if I took the time to see it. I did get surprised by a nice brown at a place I did not expect and that was just plain fun. No traffic, no politics, no bosses needing something right away and maybe most of all - No hurry. I could feel the quiet, peace and recharge my batteries. Also the cigar and nip or so put me in the right mood.

Let it rain! Thanks and grins.

That's a nice pattern. Did you tie it?
