Most important thing after the water has slowed on a sunny day is presentation imo. Long casts with a soft landing. Limiting your false casts will help with twisting tippets and leaders (as well as the inevitable birds nest if you are whipping it back and forth for 5 minutes). Practice a loading technique like a haul to generate some line speed. Not saying knots & fly selection don't help, but i think the returns are pretty marginal at best.
