Default length of rope for bow line

This may be a little too much detail, but is there a rule of thumb for how much rope one needs for bow line? How much is long enough, but not too long for a river boat? I assume one needs more for a river boat than for one that will be tied to a dock. Suggestions welcome.

Ain't never measured.............20 ft should be plenty. If it's too long cut it in half and you have two ropes. Only reason you would need more than 20 ft is to anchor in super fast water, which is a bad idea anyway in my opinion
