Family activities, food trucks, foot races and powerhouse tours: Come join us for all the fun! It's Norris Dam’s 80th anniversary, and we’re celebrating on July 29 and 30.

We’re throwing a big dam party Friday July 29 and Saturday July 30…and you’re invited!

To commemorate the 80th birthday of Norris Dam, TVA’s first hydroelectric project, we’re offering tours of Norris Dam’s powerhouse, sponsoring a race, presenting displays (including a TVA helicopter and transmission truck) and hosting a celebration with food, live music, family-friendly activities—including educational performances by “Dr. Energy”—and more.

Free and open to the public, TVA employees and retirees, we’re celebrating eight decades of the dam’s continuous service, dating from when it began initial operation in July of 1936. The activities—held on the dam reservation grounds—will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

In the mood for some exercise? The Knoxville Track Club has partnered with TVA to host the Big Dam 8K Race and a two-mile fun walk along the beautiful Norris Songbird Trail early Saturday morning, July 30. For more information, or to register for the race, click here.

Parking for all events will be at the Museum of Appalachia (2819 Andersonville Hwy., Clinton, Tenn.), with shuttles running to and from the celebration site all day. Water bottles and sunscreen are welcome, but please leave chairs, coolers and pets at home.

People who plan to attend the event but have special needs (mobility and otherwise) should call (865) 632-6000 for assistance by Wednesday July 27.

Since Norris was the first TVA-constructed and first TVA-built project to begin operations, this event kicks off a yearlong recognition of all of the TVA dams, including those that were planned under the 1936 Unified Development of the Tennessee River System plan.

That document outlined TVA’s integrated resource management approach to the Tennessee River and its tributaries. It was essential in laying the groundwork for providing flood control, improved navigation and generation of affordable electricity to the people of the Valley.

Today, the vast hydroelectric system is the tangible symbol of TVA’s mission of service—and of taming the Tennessee River to improve life in the Valley.
