We are on brother, no snow here or in forcast. Cast from the bank or gravel bar, the first cast of the year is the thing! Hot dogs and fixins, hot baked beans and hot coffee aplenty. We are good in the hood! Multiple Mr. Buddy heaters in the warming shack! Put that hammer down and put the North in the rear view mirror! On a side note Dave H and Kris hit the Clinch today and had a 10 plus fish day on winter midges.

As a former northerner, it does not get cold long enough for the streams to freeze over down here. Dave Harrel and I were on the Clinch today (double grand slams) weather was cold but wasn't really noticeable until the wind picked up towards the end of the day. I have some pocket warmers if anyone needs them. ADVICE: Wear your waders even if you don't get them wet they help keep your body heat contained. I hope to see everyone there! Stan please be careful on them roads.

The Clinch was fishing decent for winter fishing Saturday. This was the water temperature about 12" below the surface.

We made it back without incident. And yes, I was being just a bit hyperbolic with the comment about everything being iced over. But not to worry, I will be there with a big pot of steaming hot Taco Soup to help keep folks warmed, at least in the cockles of their hearts (or tummies, which are close!). See everyone who isn't a "candy pants" tomorrow. SC

Stana, glad you made it back! We are watching the road conditions in the Park, they had a band of snow come thru some roads are closed.

Bigsur's New Year's Day Karma 2018 is on at Metcalf Bottom and rolling rain or shine! If snow should close the Park gates tomorrow, pay attention for the alternative location at Clinch River which will be posted here and on the Great Smoky Mountain TU Facebook link below right up until 9AM Monday. [Exact location details will be posted here or at Great Smoky Mountain TU Facebook below] Happy New Year to all!

Remember in cold weather its always about layers and no exposed skin. The basics we used in Ski Patrol was a base layer like long underwear or UnderArmour equivalent,
a sweater, or thick sweatshirt, or 1/4 zip, topped off by winter jacket, face mask or scarf, topped off with a toboggan or hat/hood and gloves. The secret is no exposed skin, plenty of fluids and good food.

Final location decision by 10:30 AM-Stay loose, it ain't a job or mortgage!

To the hard core I am following close Great Smoky road conditions Little River Rd from Townsend Wye to Sugarlands is temporarily closed, also the back way in on Wear Cove Rd to Metcalf Bottoms is temporarily closed. Will see between now and 10:30 AM if that changes as sun hits or they scrape. Probably more a coating or glaze than much snow accumulation if any.

The back up location is at Highway-441, Clinch River past the Weir dam going towards the big dam on the right hand side is a pavilion with roof and picnic tables, grills sits up high on hill and a road leads right to it. You can see from road. It is about a 1/2 mile or less past the Weir dam on right I will have the green 4Runner-[The Beast]. Stay tuned I will message here and post on Little River Forum and Great Smoky Mountain TU Facebook. Happy New Year!

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park Little River Road to Metcalf Bottoms did not open till-mid afternoon on New Year's Day, so for the first time in six years of "Bigsur's New Year's Day Karma" I made the change at 10:30 AM yesterday to the backup location on the Clinch River. The crowd was small but the baddest crew ever to brave the sub-freezing weather and yes fish, we roll rain or shine, snow or hail!

The secret to below freezing temps besides no exposed skin is great food, if you starve at our events it is your own fault!
Hot Taco soup from Stanta Claus, fried chicken, taters & rice, grilled brats and all the fixins with baked beans kept the
body and soul warm all day. All required to getting your "Bigsur's New Year's Day Karma" cast in for the kick off of 2018

"STANTA CLAUS MAKIN DA TACO SOUP MAGIC CAJUN STYLE"

    "ONLY LOOKS LIKE A HOLD-UP"

    "ICE STATION ZEBRA COOK STATION"

INSIDE THE WARMING SHACK! "WHAT AN 1890'S WINTER MINING CAMP WOULD HAVE LOOKED LIKE WITH MR. BUDDY HEATERS" NOTE THE PLATE FULL OF HAND WARMERS IN FRONT OF HEATER, THANKS KRIS! "DAVE, IS THAT ICE IN YOUR DRINK "OH MY GOD?"

I AM PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE 'BIGSUR'S NEW YEAR'S DAY KARMA 2018" WINNER FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 6 YEARS
KRIS NICHOLS! TOTAL TAKE WAS THREE CLINCH RIVER TROUT, USING A TINY PACK OF KETCHUP TO NET ALL THREE SUB-FROZEN FISH. HERE HE IS RECEIVING HIS PHOTO OPP IN THE WORLD FAMOUS "HERB'S WELDING SHOP" MEMORIAL HAT AND OF COURSE THE TAKE HOME 6-PACK OF ARMOUR VIENNA SAUSAGE!" CONGRATULATIONS KRIS, YOUR PLAQUE WILL SOON BE READY TO RECEIVE AND WINNER'S PICTURE TAKEN.
