Tenkara Fly Fishing Class

Instructor: Rob Worthing, MD.

The Little River Outfitters Tenkara class is a one-day intensive course on the tenkara fly fishing method.

The class is taught by Rob Worthing, MD, who is a founding member of Tenkara Guides LLC and a member of Team Oni USA.

If you do not have a Tenkara fly rod and line, we will have loaners for you. Or, bring your own.

This is a one-day class, held in our classroom, on the casting lawn at the store/school and an on-stream demonstration. The cost is $125, which includes lunch. This class is limited to 10 students.

Born in the mountains of Japan, tenkara is perfectly suited for the freestone streams and tailwaters of Southern Appalachia. With an emphasis on presentation, this fly fishing method offers both a simple introduction for the beginner and hidden challenges that will benefit even the most experienced angler.  This school sets the standard for tenkara in the Southeast. All experience levels are encouraged to attend.

In this class you will learn about the history of tenkara and how it has evolved into modern tenkara. You will learn about the gear, rod, line and fly and basic rigging.

Fundamental Technique:

This topic includes ichthyology, hydrology and entomology, basic casting, dead drift, detecting strikes and playing and landing fish.

Advanced Technique:

You will learn advanced casting, including Oni loops (aerial mends), long line tenkara, playing with currents, fly manipulation (sasoi) and big fish tenkara.

This is a hands-on/interactive course with one-on-one casting coaching. Real-time stop motion casting analysis of each student will be conducted by Rob. And, at the end of the day, you will join him on the stream for a demonstration of the techniques covered in the class.

Rob Worthing, MD, has had rod in hand for over 30 years. An avid angler, climber, backpacker, Navy veteran, and wilderness medical professional, he has appeared in a variety of fly fishing magazines, books, television shows, and events at regional, national, and international levels. He is a certified guide and founding member of Tenkara Guides LLC, and a proud member of Team Oni USA. After 5 years of fishing and guiding in Utah, Rob moved to Lexington, KY, where he continues to fish and guide on the Southeast’s freestone streams and trophy tailwaters.
