Two men fly fishing using the tenkara method.

Tenkara is a simplified method of fly fishing, developed over 100 years ago in Japan. The rods are about 24” long, but extend to lengths of 8’ 10” to over 14 feet long. The fly line is tied to the rod. There is not actual fly reel. A piece of tippet is tied to the line, then the fly is attached. That’s about all there is to it.

Tenkara is the simplest method of fly fishing in the world. It’s perfect for beginners, children or seasoned anglers who desire a very effective way to fly fish for trout or other fish. With these long super light rods, you can reach long distances, for perfect presentation and line control. Getting a good drift has never been easier.

Tenkara is intuitive. The method breaks down the learning curve to a few steps, which are very important steps for catching fish on a fly.

The compact size of the collapsed rod, is perfect for anglers who hike or backpack into remote areas. The rods are handy in a boat, kayak or canoe. They don’t take up much space until you decide to use them. Try tenkara for bluegill!

Tenkara is relatively inexpensive. You just need a rod, a short fly line, flies, tippet material, nippers and forceps. Rods start at $157.

If you break a section, you can replace it yourself. Tenkara USA will send you the new section or sections for a nominal shipping and handling fee.
