Temple Fork has been an innovator in fly fishing technology for several years. The company showed the fly fishing world that good fly rods could be made at a lower price. At first I was skeptical. I had not met anyone at the company and it took the urging of Lefty Kreh to start stocking them in our shop. I’ve told the story before. You probably know about this.
Paula and I own several Temple Fork fly rods. Ours are all in the Professional Series in line weights from 5 through 12. I like them because they cast well, fight well and they don’t cost an arm and a leg. They are in the $140 to $150 price range. The Professional Series rods are also great for small streams but the company designed a new series a few years ago to serve the small stream fisherman. They called their new line of rods “Finesse”. They, like the Professionals are signed and endorsed by Lefty.
Finesse rods have a more traditional taper and action for those who fish small flies and fine tippets on light lines. They were designed for that purpose. And they load and cast well at short distances, which is essential to small stream fishing. TFO tailored these rods for smooth, accurate and delicate presentations and they roll cast well. What else could a mountain fisherman want? Well, one more thing. They are good looking. They have a deep olive finish and a Rosewood insert. TFO rods come with a sock but not a tube. We sell their triangle tubes for $19.95 more.
Since we are located right next to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and most of our streams are small you can imagine what happed when we offered these to our customers. We sell the heck out of them. They are a perfect Smokies rod. Try one out next time you are in the shop, you will be very impressed.
So give a Finesse a try. If you don’t like it bring it or send it back and we’ll refund your money. These are one of the few rods I would recommend buying without casting it first because they are made to fit a certain niche and they do it well. Not only will you be purchasing a fine rod at a reasonable price, you will have a great team of people backing your new rod. And you will be dealing with a company who cares deeply about fly fishing, trout, Troutfest, Casting for Recovery, Project Healing Waters and their customers. They are people who care and they prove it every day. Of course we'll be backing the product too.
