Simms offers two basic materials for their packs.  The Headwaters line is made from durable 1680 Denier Ballistic Nylon with a DWR finish.

The Dry Creek bags are made from waterproof coated nylon and the zippers are water and corrosion resistant.  The coated nylon is similar to that used on high end pontoon boats and rafts.  They are rugged and you will keep your gear dry.

I needed a backpack to carry my cameras and lenses into the backcountry.  The backpack needed to double as a waterproof camera boat bag too.  I chose the Dry Creek Roll-Top Backpack.  I simply put my cameras and lenses in padded camera cases and dump them into the backpack.  Rain and spray will not enter the pack.  My cameras are safe.  If I need to add a chestpack I can at any time and it will attach to the front of the pack.
