Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:32 am, the temperature outside is 61.3 degrees. That temperature reading is reported by a personal weather station about ½ from our house. I did not believe it, so I checked other stations nearby. I think it is correct.
Today will be warm again, with a high temperature in the mid-60’s. There is a 50% chance for rain today. Tonight’s low temperature will drop only to the mid-50’s. Tomorrow will be warm once again, with a high near 60 degrees. There is a 90% chance for rain tomorrow.
Cold air will move into East Tennessee Friday night. The mercury will plunge into the upper 20’s, while rain will likely change to a Wintery mix, then snow. The high temperature Saturday will only reach the freezing mark. There is a 40% chance for snow Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 129 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.77 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 310 cfs. The water temperature is 38.1 degrees this morning.
In 24 hours, the water temperature has risen 5 degrees. If it continues at this rate, we may see water temperatures in the mid-40’s by Friday. Should that happen, fishing will be much improved, at least by Friday. We are looking for water temperatures in the mid-40’s, for trout to become active. Yesterday, I didn’t think that could happen this week. Now, I believe it may happen.
Water temperatures will fall this weekend. Fishing will slow. Roads could be slick in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There is a chance some roads in the Park will close, temporarily, Friday night or Saturday.
If you plan to go this weekend, go tomorrow. I think that will be your best opportunity for a while!
Melissa and David Harrell will be conducting a Free Fly Tying Demonstration at the Shop, Saturday from 10 am until 2 pm. It’s Free. Just show up. They are both talented fly fishers and fly tyers. Both have developed their own fly patterns. Their home water is the Clinch River tailwater.
Melissa and David are both very nice people, who are willing to share their fly fishing knowledge. You do not have to be a fly tyer, to learn from their demonstration. Ask questions about fly fishing. They will be discussing fly fishing and fly tying Saturday. Just pull up a chair to either of their desks and enjoy your day. CLICK HERE to learn more.
We have been holding Free Fly Tying Demonstrations, during the Winter months, at our store, for at least 20 years. We almost always hold these demonstrations on Saturdays. They are always well attended and enjoyable. It gives anglers something to do on a cold Saturday. This is part of the LRO culture, that will likely last for decades in the future.
We have also been holding fly fishing and fly tying classes for over 20 years. You can view our 2018 school schedule by CLICKING HERE.
You will see there is a beginner fly tying class that will be held Saturday. This all-day class will get you started. The cost is $85, which includes everything you need for the day, including lunch.
I work at home these days, so I’m not aware of many things going on at the shop. I do not know if there are openings in Saturday’s class. There may be. If you are interested, call 865-448-9459. If there is an opening, you can sign up over the phone.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
