Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

If you do not see today’s Fishing Report, please refresh your browser to empty your cache.

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 6:01 am, the temperature outside is 25.7 degrees.

Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the low 30’s. We have a 30% chance for snow showers this morning. Watch for wet spots on roads that froze overnight. Watch for ice on bridges.

Tonight’s low will dip into the mid-teens. Tomorrow will be sunny and cold. Monday will be warmer.

Little River is flowing at 537 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.79 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 303 cfs. The water temperature is 41.7 degrees this morning.

Several roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are temporarily closed due to snow and ice. They include, Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road), Foothills Parkway East, Cades Cove Loop, Laurel Creek Road, Little River Road, Cherokee Orchard and Line Springs Road into Metcalf Bottoms. You can visit the Park’s Roads Twitter Page by CLICKING HERE, to learn more about road closings and openings.

I stepped outside this morning to look around. We do not have snow at our house. One of our decks, that was wet yesterday, is slick.

I won’t know about road conditions until the guys at the shop arrive this morning. I do not know if our fly tying class or the free tying demonstration will be held until I talk to Daniel. I will post any cancellations, if we have them, here, in about two hours.

Fishing in the Smokies is pretty much out of the question at this point. The roads are closed in our area of the Park. The streams are flowing high and the water temperature has fallen. Fishing will probably be slow anyway.

Water temperatures will continue to fall through the weekend. Fishing will not improve. Cold air will be with us all week, until next weekend, when it will likely warm significantly again. I’m looking at the long term forecast right now. We may see highs in the upper 50’s next weekend. It may be warm through January 27th.

I hope everything goes as planned today. We will be holding a beginner fly tying class. Melissa and Dave Harrell will be conducting a Free Fly Tying Demonstration, between 10 am and 2 pm. All you have to do is show up.

I will be adding new flies to our online store today and tomorrow, working from home. Tonight and tomorrow, the NFL playoffs continue.

I will get back to you in a little while, to let you know what the guys at the shop are saying about the roads.

UPDATE 8:28 AM - DANIEL CALLED AND TOLD ME THE ROADS ARE FINE. SO, WE WILL NOT CANCEL THE FLY TYING CLASS OR THE FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATION AT THIS POINT. I WILL UPDATE LATER IF I GET NEW INFORMATION.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
