Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 6:49 am, the temperature outside is 54.3 degrees. It is raining again this morning.
We were under a high wind watch yesterday and last night. There may have been high wind somewhere, but not here. .25” of rain fell yesterday. Since midnight, another .26” has fallen.
Rain will continue today, tonight and tomorrow. A thunderstorm is possible this afternoon. High temperatures will be in the mid-60’s both days. Lows at night will dip to the low 50’s. We could get another quarter of an inch of rain today.
Little River is flowing at 387 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.43 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 233 cfs. The water temperature is 54.3 degrees this morning.
At the current flow, Little River is fairly high but certainly fishable. The water could be stained in some streams. The streams may continue to rise some today. How much they will rise would just be a guess.
If Little River rises to above 2.5 feet, and I think it will, you will need to be careful wading in areas. We do not take beginner students on the streams when Little River is flowing above 2.5 feet.
If I were here to fish, I would go. You may find stained water or you may not. The rain has not been heavy during the past 24 hours. So, the water may just be high but fairly clear.
I take back what I just said. It is pouring now. I checked the radar. More is on the way. This may not last too long. The heaviest rain is to our west and it is missing the Park. There is a chance the streams will be blown out today. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
You may want to sleep in this morning, like I did.
If you go, nymphs, with extra weight will probably work best for you. If the stream you planned to fish is stained, I would go somewhere else and hopefully find clear water.
You might try a trout tailwater as an option. It looks like Norris Dam will not be generating today at times. The same is true at Cherokee Dam. Check the TVA website from the links below and make that call yourself.
It looks like Little River has peaked at 2.43 feet. That may change. The fishing gauge is still pointing at good, so that is encouraging. We’ll have to see what happens.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
