Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is a beautiful, clear morning today. Looks like Spring has finally made its arrival.
Water levels in the Smokies are still high this morning. The gauge on Little River is giving a reading of 2.96 feet or 700 c.f.s. This is higher than the daily normal of 250 c.f.s. Water temperatures are good at about 52F. The main thing is conditions have been fairly consistent over the past day or two.
You will need to be very careful if you fish the mountain streams. Stay out of the water as much as you can. Smaller streams will have better flows and a little easier conditions.
This next week fishing should be great. The weather is going to be consistent and warm. Water levels will drop and water temps will rise. The bug activity should be fantastic. Anglers have been seeing a wide range of insects hatching. Hendricksons, March Browns, Light Cahills, Sulphers, Yellow Sallies, Caddis, etc have all been coming off. Jack Gregory even saw some Green Drakes on Little River. I didn't even realize there were Green Drakes on Little River (they are burrowing bugs and like muddier bottoms).
Lighter colored flies would be my choice. Sizes are ranging #12 to #16. Fishing a dry with a nymph dropper would be a good idea also. Pheasant tails, prince nymphs, squirmy worms in #12 - #16.
Trying to get back in the swing of things writing the fishing report. I should start writing it at 5 am like Byron does. That would have made things easier than a busy Saturday morning sitting in the Shop. I'll be writing the Report for a few days so I'll get on track and get you better reports.
Dave has a Fly Fishing 101 class going on right now. They are outside learning how to cast. After that they will move inside to learn about equipment and how to tie knots. These Free classes are a great way for people to try out fly fishing and get a good start.
If you have been fly fishing for awhile and just want to improve your skills, we have a Nymphing Tactics Class coming up on Saturday May 5th. In this class you will learn techniques for fishing nymphs more effectively. The first part of the class is here at the Shop where you will work on some new casts and learn about equipment, rigging and theory. Then after lunch the class heads to the river where you will put this new knowledge to practical use. The cost of the class is $150 and includes lunch. There is still plenty of space but you need to call to reserve a spot. 865-448-9459.
I'm going to wrap this up so it isn't too late. Be careful if you head out on the river today but have a fun time!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
