Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. The weather is wonderful again this morning. It is already warming up.
Water levels in the Smokies are very good. This morning the stream flow gauge on Little River is giving a reading of 2.31 feet or 332 c.f.s. This is just a little bit higher than the daily normal of 257 c.f.s. The streams are running clear.
Water temperatures have been nice an consistent over the past several days. This morning the gauge is reading 55F.
Reports from anglers are that they are seeing a lot of bug activity. This morning a customer brought in a little yellow stonefly that he had caught. It was around a size #12. Anglers are also seeing a good variety of mayflies and caddis. Lighter colors is the trend right now. Light Cahill, Yellow Parachute Adams, Sulphurs, Yellow Sally, Elk Hair Caddis are all good topwater patterns.
Don't forget about the nymphs. BH Pheasant Tails, Prince Nymph, Squirmy Worms, Tellico Nymphs are all excellent choices. Using a dry as an indicator and dropping a smaller nymph below can be a smart way to go right now.
Most all of the rivers have been fishing well. Higher elevations like Lynn Camp Prong are as solid as ever. Little River above Elkmont can also be a good destination if you want to put some distance between you and the car.
This morning has been busy with lots of people in getting new waders and a selection of flies to fish today. I'll cut this short so I can get started on everything.
NYMPHING TACTIC CLASS on SATURDAY MAY 5th!
If you have been fly fishing for awhile and just want to improve your skills, we have a Nymphing Tactics Class coming up on Saturday May 5th. In this class you will learn techniques for fishing nymphs more effectively. The first part of the class is here at the Shop where you will work on some new casts and learn about equipment, rigging and theory. Then after lunch the class heads to the river where you will put this new knowledge to practical use. The cost of the class is $150 and includes lunch. There is still plenty of space but you need to call to reserve a spot. 865-448-9459.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
