Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:35 am, the temperature outside is 68.7 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny and hot, with a high temperature near 90 degrees. The chance for thunderstorms is only 20%. Tomorrow will be sunny and hot with a high near 90 degrees.
A higher chance for rain and cooler temperatures are in the forecast beginning Friday and continuing through Sunday. High temperatures for the period will rise only into the low to mid 80’s, with nighttime temps dropping to the mid 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 311 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.26 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 122 cfs. The water temperature is 65.8 degrees this morning.
Over the next few days, you should fish the mid to high elevation streams where the water is cooler. Look for midday water temperatures in the mid 60’s or cooler.
Though streams in the Smokies are flowing much higher than normal, that is good for fishing. Fishing conditions are ideal, in the higher elevations. I don’t think we could ask for better fishing conditions in July.
Terrestrial insects are an important food source during the Summer months. Trout are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to feed on land based insects that fall into the water. Foam beetles and inchworm patterns are essential to your arsenal of flies. You may do well with any floating beetle, ant or submerged inchworm pattern.
The Green or Pink Weenies are killer patterns to use. The loop on the tail gives the drifting worm more action as it sways in the water. Joe Humphreys told me that once. His friend, and famous Pennsylvania angler George Harvey is credited with designing this pattern, according to Joe.
Lefty Kreh was a firm believer in the Green Weenie and other color variations. He wrote a story about these flies for our website. You can read it by CLICKING HERE. To be honest, I forgot Lefty wrote this article for us. I did an internet search for “Lefty Kreh Green Weenie” this morning and this article popped up. To my surprise, it was on our website. Lefty wrote a lot of articles for me over the years. I paid him $20 for each one.
In the article, Lefty writes about the day he was at our shop and the conversation with Brian Courtney about Weenies came up. Lefty told me he liked Red Weenies. I took Lefty to the airport and he flew home. A couple of days later, Daniel told me Lefty called and ordered some red Ultra Chenille, to tie some Weenies.
I miss Lefty. Lefty passed away a few months ago. He was a good friend who I enjoyed many days with over the years. I have not talked to Joe Humphreys in a while. I think I’ll call him this week.
Other than foam beetles and Weenies, I would use a Yellow Neversink Caddis, small Yellow Stimulator, Rob’s Hellbender, or any other good Yellow Sally Stonefly pattern.
Jack and I must be nuts. He and I are taking the boat to one of the lakes, probably Tellico, to fish today. Mind you, this is the day before Independence Day. A lot of people around here are off from work. We may be playing “bumper boats” with others on the lake. It is going to be sunny and hot. Fishing will probably be slow. I can assure you of one thing…we will have fun. We always do.
I plan to work tomorrow and I will write a fishing report early, as usual.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
