Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

If you do not see today’s Fishing Report, please refresh your browser to empty your cache.

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:32 am, the temperature outside is 70.3 degrees.

We have a chance for showers this morning and a greater chance for thunderstorms after 11 am. Otherwise, it will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the mid-80’s. Thunderstorms are likely tomorrow and Tuesday.

Little River is flowing at 167 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.84 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 129 cfs. The water temperature is 69.4 degrees this morning at the low elevation USGS gauge site near Townsend, just inside the Park entrance.

The streams are warm in the low elevations and flows are at normal this morning. Do yourself and the trout a favor, by fishing the streams higher in the mountains where the water is cooler. This will be a good day to venture into the backcountry.

Fishing is good. I talked to Ricky yesterday. He caught over 40 trout during a morning outing last week. Jack and Ronnie are going this morning, to a high elevation brookie stream. Those guys will catch trout, and many. It will be cooler where they are going. I don’t know exactly where that will be. Jack didn’t say.

I would go to Lynn Camp Prong, the East Prong of Little River above Elkmont, or drive and hike even further to other higher elevation streams to fish. There are many to choose from.

Try foam beetles, Green Weenies, a Yellow Neversink Caddis or a Yellow Stimulator, size #16. Pink Weenies work well in the brook trout streams. Green Weenies work well everywhere. Other nymphs or dry flies may work well for you.

Take a rain jacket and watch for rising water. If you are fishing high in the mountains, and you get wet, you may get cold. The jacket will help. Most anglers are wet wading.

Wear muted colored clothing and caps, that blend with the forest. Stealth is extremely important, especially during the months when the streams are low.

A thunderstorm could raise the water quickly in the stream you are fishing. If you see turbid water, move to the bank and prepare to exit, if needed. Heavy rain could be falling upstream, and you may not know.

The predicted rain is coming at just the right time. The streams are getting lower and it is time for a re-fill. This has been a wonderful July so far.

I am working on our fly tying department, and have been for about 3 weeks. It is stocked well right now. I am ordering every week to replenish. There are several catalogs from our supplies laying around here in my home office. Our Excel order forms are up to date and organized. This has been a lot of fun. That was my favorite department for many years. It is my favorite department right now.

The next step is to decide what new materials we will stock. They will be added to the order forms, new tags will be printed for the wall hangers, then the new items will be ordered. One week later, they will be on the wall for you to see and hopefully buy and try.

We have been selling Aunt Lydia’s Sparkle Yarn for at least 20 years. Over time, the yarn became less popular. So, we cut back our offering to about 3 or 4 colors. I added more last week. Why? Jack told me he uses it to tie his special dry and wet flies.

The yarn was originally used to make carpet and rugs. I suppose a carpet that reflects light was popular, maybe in the 60’s. That makes sense. I remember the 60’s. Our decorating tastes were different then. What looked good in the 60’s is considered “gaudy” now.

Yesterday morning, Jack gave me nine of his favorite flies tied with the yarn. He uses it on all of them, and the trout love the sparkle. Sparkle yarn hates water. When treated with floatant, it floats like a cork.

He pulls fibers from a hank and ties it in for tails. He wraps dry fly bodies with a small hank. He chops up the yarn and mixes it with dubbing on some dry flies. He uses it for wings. I am sitting here right now, looking at that small box of flies, thinking of all the possibilities, I never thought of before. By the way, Aunt Lydia’s Sparkle Yarn is cheap.

I have not seen him tie these flies, but I will. He plans to demonstrate this process at Fly Tyers Weekend or at one of our Free Saturday Tying Demos held next Winter. When you see him on the schedule, you should be there.

I better stock plenty of Aunt Lydia’s before that show.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
