Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

If you do not see today’s Fishing Report, please refresh your browser to empty your cache.

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is cloudy and 68F this morning. There is still scattered rain and storms in the forecast but don't let that stop you from getting out and enjoying the mountains today.

Today will be mostly cloudy with a 60% to 80% chance for showers followed by a 50% to 60% chance tonight. There is a good chance for thunderstorms tomorrow and Wednesday.

The streamflow gauge on Little River is giving a reading of 2.03 feet or 225 c.f.s. This is higher than the daily normal of 130 c.f.s. Water temperatures are a nice 66F in the low elevations.

Last night, after work, I laced up my Chota Hybrid boots and headed to the mountains. It had rained off and on all afternoon. I didn't have much time so I stayed close to the road. The water level was perfect but the rain had stained it. Even at such a low elevation the stream was cold. A little rainbow decided to come out and play pretty quick. Then drought. I know I should have been fishing a nymph or maybe even a small streamer but I enjoy dry flies, especially on a small creek. My fly of choice was a seasonal favorite, a Yellow Sally. All in all, I brought 4 average rainbows to hand. Not a bad way to end a day filled with Monday paperwork.

Fishing has been good in the Smokies. Conditions are good, especially for this late in the Summer. We have been receiving consistent rain. Water levels are good. Temperatures haven't been too bad either. Even though daytime temperatures have been hot it cools down nicely each night giving the streams a chance to reset.

You will find the best conditions in the mid to high elevation streams. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to be fishing. Fishing slows mid-day.

Dry flies are most anglers favorite. Yellow Sallies are an excellent choice. Neversink Caddis, Rob's Hellbender, Yellow Sally. Sizes are #14 and #16. Terrestrials like beetles and ants can be very good. Green weenies work well as a dropper.

Nymphs would have been a better choice for me last night. Prince nymphs are usually my go to nymph. Each of us at the Shop have our favorites. Dave Carson will tell you the Double Tungsten Bead Stonefly, John will say Tellico Nymph.

If you get the chance to fish this afternoon keep an eye on the weather. The rain has been scattered so I wouldn't let it keep me off the water. That being said if it does rain upstream from you water levels can rise rapidly. If you hear a difference or see the water clarity change, make sure you are on the road or trail side of the stream. It isn't good to be stuck on the wrong side of a swollen creek.

This is a little off topic but, I lent the Shop's Orvis fiberglass rod to a customer and now I can't remember who that was. I know it was a long time customer....but I can't remember who.

Last week was the "big" fly tackle dealer show in Orlando Florida. This is the wholesale show where the manufacturers show off their new products for next year. The sales reps will start coming by the Shop over the next month or so to show us all the new stuff so we can place orders. I've seen a few pictures of new Fishpond products and they look as great as they usually do. TFO is re-doing the Finesse rod. I have always liked the Finessee so I hope they figured out a way to make it even better. Simms has cleaned up their offering for 2019. They have a less expensive wader that still looks very nice. Simms has redone their packs and sling bags also. They look very nice. We'll let you know when we learn of the new and cool.

I hope you are able to get out and fish this week. The weather should be good for fishing for the next several day. Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
