Little River is flowing at 164 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.86 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 106 cfs. The water temperature is 66.9 degrees this morning at the low elevation USGS site in the Park near the Townsend entrance.
Little Pigeon River is flowing somewhat high this morning, due to rain that fell overnight, but the water is receding now. All other streams in the Park that have USGS flow gauges are flowing above normal.
Fishing conditions are excellent, especially for August. The streams are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the mid to high elevations where the water is cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. My dry fly choices would be, foam beetle, ant, Yellow Stimulator, Parachute Adams or a Yellow Sally Stonefly pattern. Good nymph pattern choices are Bead Head Pheasant Tail, Green Weenie or a Pink Weenie.
I have heard mixed reports about the trout tailwaters. Some say fishing has been slower than usual, while others say fishing is good. The smallmouth bass fishing on the lower tailwaters is probably very good right now. It usually is in August.
I returned yesterday from a fishing trip in Kentucky. My buddy Frank and I floated the Cumberland River, below Wolf Creek Dam, with guide Hagan Wonn, Monday and Tuesday. Fishing was good. We caught trout on double nymph rigs under strike indicators. The largest trout was caught by Frank, a 20” rainbow. We tried top water fishing with cicada patterns, but that did not work for us.
Frank caught the smallest rainbow Hagan has seen in the river. We think it might have been stream born, possibly “young of the year”. Maybe it was the product of spawning in Hatchery Creek. I hope so.
Rainbows and browns have been spawning in Hatchery Creek.
Hagan is a good friend and an excellent guide. We always have a great time with Hagan. You can find his contact information on our website by CLICKING HERE.
Frank and I rented a cabin a few hundred yards from the river and the ramp we launched from both mornings. Hagan lined that up for us. It was perfect.
Enjoy this beautiful Fall-like weather and go fishing.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
