Little River is flowing at 117 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.67 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 97 cfs. The water temperature is 66.5 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS Gauges are flowing above median flow today. Median flow is low, so do not expect high water anywhere you go fishing today, in the mountains.
The streams are also warm in the low elevations. Fish the mid to high elevation streams where the water is cooler.
Lower flows require stealth. Actually, avoiding being seen by trout is always important, but harder to do when the streams are flowing low. Dress to blend in with the forest. You may not need to wade much and you should try not to in the areas where you intend to fish. I think trout notice the water movement and noise associated with wading, when the streams are flowing at Summer levels.
I would concentrate my efforts on choppy water, that you find in runs or riffles. Shaded water will likely be best, especially if you are fishing with dry flies.
The trout are looking for food. I think they will be particularly interested in terrestrials, like beetles or inchworms. They may be feeding on the surface, or below. Try both. Searching dry fly patterns such as Stimulators, Parachute Adams or any yellow foam floating fly that resembles a small stonefly would be my choice.
You should have a good fishing day today, maybe not like we see in the Spring, but better than we enjoy most Summer days. I would sneak into the backcountry, in the mid to high elevations, and enjoy this beautiful day.
You might want to fish on a tailwater for trout or smallmouth bass.
If you are fly fishing on a lake today, I would go early or late when the sun is off the water.
We lost a great American yesterday, Senator John McCain. He was a hero. Thank you sir for your service.
Happy birthday to the National Park Service. The service is 102 years old. Thankfully for all of us, our leaders decided to save our treasures, for future generations. Read more on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
I started work earlier than usual this morning. I plan to be at the shop at daybreak, to wash windows. I don’t want water dripping on our early bird customers when they enter the shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
