Little River is flowing at 107 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.63 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 103 cfs. The water temperature is 67.6 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Park are flowing slightly above normal today, which is low compared to Spring, early Summer and Winter. Streams are typically low in October, our driest month of the year.
The lower elevation streams are warm. Fishing will be best in the mid to high elevation streams where the water is cooler.
Stealth is huge right now. Blend in with the forest and stay low so you won’t be seen by the trout. Fish the choppy water where the trout are hiding. Because it will be sunny today, fishing the shaded areas of streams is a good idea. Starting early in the morning or late in the afternoon is also a good idea.
Dry flies and nymphs will produce for you. I would use foam beetles, yellow Stimulators, Yellow Sally Stonefly patterns or a Parachute Adams for my dry fly choices. Green or Pink Weenies or Bead Head Pheasant Tail nymphs will work as a dropper or fished weighted and alone.
According to the guides I have talked to lately, the tailwaters are fishing well for trout and smallmouth bass.
Lake fishing will be best early and late. As the water warms during the day, and when the sun is on the water, bass and other fishes prefer suspending near cover in deeper water. They will move into shallower water when the sun is off the water. There will be times when you will encounter cloud cover during the day, over the next week, if the weather forecasters are correct. On those days, fly fishing may be good in the shallows, all day long.
We should be enjoying cooler days and nights soon, with maybe a few thrown in that are not. September is right around the corner. The historical monthly average temperatures in September are a high of 80 degrees, and a low of 55 degrees. Later in the month, it is usually much cooler than that.
We see more active anglers in the shop in mid September. August is always slow at the shop.
I am really looking forward to Fall fishing along with cooler days and nights.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
