Little River is flowing at 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.60 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 82 cfs. The water temperature is 69.4 degrees at the low elevation USGS Gauge site.
Most streams in the Park are flowing slightly above median flow for this date. Little Pigeon River reacted to rain overnight, rose some, and has now crested. The river and others are all others are flowing low, which is normal this time of the year.
These low flows are making it tougher for anglers though you can catch trout. Stealth is of the utmost importance to your success. The trout will be hiding in broken water, pockets, runs or near cover. You should make every effort not to be seen by the fish. Wear muted clothing to blend with the forest.
You may want to use lighter tippet than you have been using. 5X or 6X might be a good idea, depending on where you are fishing. I would start with 5X tippet.
Ants or beetles should work for your dry flies. I tend to like smaller dry flies when the water is this low. Try a #16 Stimulator, Parachute Adams or Yellow Neversink Caddis. Green Weenies are good sub-surface flies to use. A small Bead Head Pheasant Tail is another good choice.
Fish the mid to high elevation streams where the water is cooler. The streams are very warm in the low elevations. That trend will continue for several days.
This is going to be an interesting day for me. Daniel called last night and asked me to work in the shop, waiting on customers. He said he is short handed for some reason. I have no idea how to use the cash registers. I am not familiar with the locations of the flies. I don’t know how to generate a fishing license. There are usually 3 experienced customer service people working at the shop on Sundays. Today there will be one, and me.
So, I started gathering information for this report earlier than normal and will finish quickly. Then, I will work out for 40 minutes before taking a shower and going to the shop.
If we are not giving you good service today, it won’t be because we are not trying.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
