It rained in most watersheds in the Smokies yesterday. All streams that have USGS gauges are reporting higher flows. Flows in all streams have peaked, at least for now. There is a chance you may find stained water this morning, and at other times today, due to the predicted rain.
Little River is flowing at 215 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.03 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 80 cfs. The water temperature is 70.3 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 717 cfs or 2.47 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 159 cfs.
I learned yesterday, fishing has been good over the past few days, better than I thought it would be for many anglers. Rickey has been fishing here for two weeks and reported to me, “I believe the fishing has been the best I’ve seen in years, size and numbers”. I overheard two of our of beginner fly fishing school students, report catching trout yesterday, on the first day out. Other anglers reported good fishing to me yesterday.
And, I have heard others say fishing is slow. We hear both sides often in the shop.
I talked to guide Josh Pfeiffer yesterday. He told me smallmouth fishing on the tailwaters has been excellent. Two of Josh’s clients, Bill and Dave told me the same thing. They are catching some very large smallies, over 20” long.
We have a high chance for rain today and it may be heavy. According to the National Weather Service, “Some localized heavy rains will be possible, and along with that the possibility of some localized flooding”.
We will enjoy cooler temperatures over the next three days. That may impact fishing in a positive way. Or the rain could do just the opposite.
If you go fishing in the Smokies, be prepared to fish with weighted nymphs. Dry flies may work in some streams, depending on the water levels. I would fish a mid to high elevation stream where the water is cooler, at least today. Rain a cool air may lower the water temperatures.
It is supposed to be overcast today and mostly cloudy tomorrow. That benefits the angler.
I would pick a stream and go. Be watchful for quickly rising water at all times. An isolated thunderstorm could be pouring water into the stream you are fishing, without you even knowing it.
Tailwater fishing should be good today and tomorrow, depending on generations schedules.
Lake fishing may be good too. I plan to go this week, at least once.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
