Little River is flowing at 164 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.86 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 82 cfs. The water temperature is 68.4 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 674 cfs, or 2.41 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date there is 167 cfs.
Oconaluftee River and Cataloochee Creek are both flowing above median flow.
Rainfall has kept the Smokies streams in good shape this Fall, so far. We may get more today.
I would definitely go fishing today if you can. With good flows and cloud cover, we could not ask for better Fall conditions. Dry flies and nymphs are working. Try foam beetle, Yellow Neversink Caddis, Yellow Stimulator, Rob’s Hellbender, Green Weenie or Pheasant Tail patterns.
Stealth is still important, even with higher than normal flows. Fishing will be best in the mid to high elevations where the water is cooler. Anglers are doing well on the East Prong from Metcalf Bottoms to Elkmont and above. Lynn Camp Prong is fishing well. Most mid to high elevation streams should be fishing well today.
Jack and I fished on the Little Tennessee River yesterday. The fishing conditions were perfect, as good as it gets. It was overcast all day. It was cool. The wind was not blowing. Fishing was excellent.
We caught mostly largemouth bass and bluegill. Jack caught the only smallmouth bass. I have no idea how many fish we caught. We didn’t count. I took a break at one point for about a half hour. Jack probably caught ten bass during that time. The fish never stopped biting all day.
I did well using a Knucklehead for a while. Later, the top water fishing slowed.
Jack was here before daybreak. We got back to the house and talked for a while. By the time I pushed the boat into the boat house, 12 hours had gone by quickly.
It was a long day that did not seem like a long day. When that happens, you have had a good time. Jack and I always have a good time together.
Everyone is watching Hurricane Florence. People who live in coastal towns and cities in the Carolinas and Virginia are evacuating. Heavy rain, high wind and a big storm surge is predicted. Hopefully, it won’t be as awful as what forecasters are saying it may. I feel really bad for all of those people who are affected.
I checked the WBIR website. Though it is too early to tell now, they think we may get only one to two inches of rain in Knoxville, and more in the Smokies. Nobody seems to know when. It appears that will happen early next week, though nothing is certain right now.
We always see a lot of visitors in Townsend, when there are hurricane evacuations. That will be the case this week. People are usually here in big numbers, but they would rather be home. It is always sad.
Have a good day, or a great day, and thank you for being here with us.
