Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:21 am, the temperature outside is 68.7 degrees.
Today will be warm with only a slight chance for scattered thunderstorms. Tomorrow will be about the same. The chance for rain increases Saturday and Sunday.
There may be closures at Great Smoky Mountains National Park as early as tomorrow, as the Park prepares for the effects of Hurricane Florence. Closures may include roads and campgrounds. Park officials are worried about high winds, flooding, road washouts and trees falling. You can read more about their plans on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.

Tennessee Valley Authority is spilling at most of their dams, to create water storage in the impoundments due to expected heavy rainfall. Many rivers in the valley originate in North Carolina. Joe called me yesterday, to say that Brookfield Energy was spilling at Chilhowee Dam. Neither of us have seen that before. See the story on video at the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
Little River is flowing at 242 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.11 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 83 cfs. The water temperature is 68.5 degrees.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 941 cfs, or 2.75 feet on the gauge located there. Median flow for the date is 148 cfs. You will probably find higher than normal flows in most streams today.
So, we have high flows in some streams, and slightly higher than normal flows in others. We also have warm water temperatures in the low elevation streams. Fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler.
I think streams in the Little River watershed are a good choice to fish today. Fishing conditions are good. Try the East Prong from Metcalf Bottoms to Elkmont and above. Upper Middle Prong may be OK, temperature wise, but a better choice might be Lynn Camp Prong. Look for water temperatures that are 65 degrees or cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs are working. Our customers are using Rob’s Hellbender, Yellow Neversink Caddis and Green Weenies. I would pick a foam beetle for a dry fly, and also those mentioned above.
The body of a missing local man was found near Rich Mountain Road, in the Cades Cove area, not too far from our home. A bear, near the body had been feeding on the corpse and acted aggressive to rescuers. The bear was euthanized by Park biologists. There has been no conclusive determination about the cause of death. We may get several inches of rain over the next few days in the Smokies. How much rain we get from the hurricane will depend on where it makes landfall and what path it takes later. Strong winds are also predicted, in the Park.
Planning a fishing trip here this weekend or early next week might be a mistake. You may not be able to fish. The Park could be closed. Streams may be flooded. We will all be watching the path of this storm and the expected wind and rainfall amounts.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
