Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:17 am, the temperature outside is 70.7 degrees.
Today will be very warm, with highs in the upper 80’s in the foothills, low 90’s in Knoxville and highs in the 70’s and low 80’s in the mountains. The rain chance today is very low.
Saturday will be warm again. Rain will begin late Saturday night. Heavy rain, caused by Hurricane Florence, should arrive Sunday and continue through Monday. Forecast models are preliminary. At this point, we should expect 2” to 4” of rain in the foothills, with more than that in the higher elevations of the Smokies. Strong wind is expected in the Smokies. All forecasts may change, as the track of the storm and the severity is determined.
The National Park Service may begin closing some facilities soon. That was reported yesterday. They will likely close campgrounds first, and other facilities or roads later this weekend. But, there are no actual plans to close anything, that I can find, until the effects of the hurricane are determined to be conclusive.
Because many large and small rivers in our area, flow from Western North Carolina and Virginia, we can expect flooding early next week throughout the Tennessee Valley. Tennessee Valley Authority is spilling at dams, to increase water storage. Brookfield Renewable Energy is pushing water through their dams on the Little Tennessee River.

Little River is flowing at 164 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.86 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 74 cfs. The water temperature is 69.1 degrees this morning.
Fishing will remain good in the Smokies through tomorrow. Fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Stream flows are good, above normal for this time of the year. Dry flies and nymphs should work. Try Rob’s Hellbender, Smoky Mountain Candy, Mike’s Magic Beetle, Yellow Neversink Caddis, Yellow Stimulator, Green Weenie and Pheasant Tail patterns.
I would not plan of fishing in the mountains Sunday. Flash floods may be possible. After Sunday, it is likely the streams will be blown out and flooded.
I’m staying off the lakes, though I did fish one a couple of days ago. TVA and Brookfield are moving a lot of water through their systems. Fishing on the lakes may be great. Or, maybe it won’t. Expect floating or partially floating debris in the water.
There will be high flows in the tailwaters below dams now and for several days.
It’s going to be a work weekend for me. Paula is in Scotland, and won’t return for 9 more days. I enjoyed dinner at Jack and Donna’s home last night. I’ll get with Jim and Pat soon. Like many of you, I’m watching the Weather Channel.
I hired a company to seal and re-stripe the store’s parking lot yesterday. They will do it in mid-October. Half will be done one day, then the balance the next day. That will look good.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
