Little River is flowing at 253 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.14 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 71 cfs. The water temperature is 66.7 degrees this morning.

Little Pigeon River is flowing at 639 cfs or 2.36 feet on the gauge. Median flow is 139 cfs for this date.

Oconaluftee River and Cataloochee Creek are both flowing above median flow. Most streams in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are flowing higher than median flow. The streams are normally flowing very low in September. Not this year. We are blessed with great fly fishing water.

The streams are warm in the low elevations. Fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures of 65 degrees or cooler. I would fish the East Prong of Little River near or above Elkmont, upper Middle Prong of Little River or Lynn Camp Prong.

With great flows that we have now, dry flies or nymphs will work. My favorite dry flies in September are, Yellow Neversink Caddis, Yellow Stimulator, Parachute Adams, foam beetles, Rob’s Hellbender or a Yellow Elk Hair Caddis. Good sub-surface flies to use now are Green Weenies or Bead Head Pheasant Tail nymphs.

It will be sunny today. Fish early and late or find shaded areas. Trout will be hiding in areas where the water is broken.

The lowland rivers are in good shape too, for September. Smallmouth bass and rock bass can be caught on poppers, nymphs and streamers. Fish the shaded areas. Fish early or late.

TVA is lowering the lakes below Summer pool. The recreational boating season is about over. They are generating a lot of water through some of the dams.

Lake fishing for me was good over a week ago. We found most largemouth bass and bluegill in areas with plenty of wooded cover. We were fishing on a cloudy day, hoping for great topwater fly fishing. That didn’t happen. Sub-surface streamers are probably your best bet right now. If you do go early or late when the sun is off the water, you may catch them on top-water flies. By all means, try.

A good fly pattern to use right now is a small Puglisi Threadfin Shad for bass or a Rubber Legged Dragon for panfish. Let the Dragons sink fairly deep, where the larger bluegill and shellcrackers are suspended.

Cooler Fall-like temperatures are in the forecast beginning Sunday. Early October will usher in much cooler air, and water. It will probably rain Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Unless we get too much rain, those should be good fishing days. They are predicted to be overcast days right now.

I love Fall. I’m especially looking forward to next week. Fishing will probably be very good. And, it will be cooler, with overcast skies at times. I plan to be in our boat on a lake, often next week. Paula will be back from Scotland late tomorrow night. I’m looking forward to seeing her. We have talked on the phone every day over the past two weeks.

I have been working at the shop lately, mainly because, I have nothing to do on our websites right now. Soon, I will be adding the new fly fishing gear to our online store and our Fishpond website. Right now, I’m waiting for Fishpond to finish their photography and put it in a Dropbox for me and others to use. They told me that will probably happen this week.

If you have not already seen them, you may start seeing the pre-spawn brown trout in the rivers next week. Everyone loves to see those big fish spawn in October and early November. When the spawn is over, it’s time to start fishing for them, through January. We all have to be careful not to wade in a trout redd. The eggs are buried under gravel, but they can be destroyed by an angler who is not careful.

We are seeing some leaf color changes. It won’t be long before the Fall colors become widespread and vivid. We all love that. A lot of other people love it too. Visitors will be arriving soon to view the mountains and streams.

Deer and elk are active. A doe and fawn walked right out into the road in front of me yesterday on my way home from work. I had to slow down to avoid hitting them. They were moving slow. I was driving slow too, thankfully. Around here, you never know when a bear or deer will cross a road where you are traveling. We have to always be alert.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
