Little River is flowing at 205 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.00 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 75 cfs. The water temperature is 67.5 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 497 cfs, or 2.14 feet on the gauge. Median flow is 148 cfs.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauges are flowing above median flow.
Stream flows remain great, for September, which are usually very low this time of the year. The low elevation streams are warm. Fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler.
Try the East Prong of Little River near Elkmont or above, the upper Middle Prong or Lynn Camp Prong. Abrams Creek, below the falls trailhead is another good choice. You will find cooler water there, due to the inflow from springs in the area.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. Good choices are foam beetles, Yellow Neversink Caddis, Yellow Stimulator, Smoky Mountain Candy or a Parachute Adams. Good sub-surface fly picks are Green Weenie, Bead Head Pheasant Tail, Tellico, or many other reasonable nymphs.
Lower Little River is flowing well for September. I looked at the river at several locations yesterday. I would try poppers, streamers or nymphs for smallmouth bass and rock bass. Most lowland rivers are flowing well above normal for September.
The lakes are still being lowered now that the recreation boating season is over. TVA will be generating at most dams today. Lake fishing has been good for largemouth bass, shellcrackers and bluegill.
After all of these years, I am playing with conventional fishing, or spin fishing on lakes and in saltwater. Many of my friends are doing the same thing. Maybe it is because we are getting older. We enjoy fishing from boats, and fishing while sitting down instead of standing.
To me it is something new, something I have not done since the 70’s and earlier. I fly fished and also used spinning tackle since the early 60’s, but remained true to fly fishing only for the past 40 years.
It is amazing the changes in conventional techniques and tackle I’ve seen over the past 40 years. There are words I have never heard spoken. There are techniques I would never have thought of. The experts are people with unrecognizable names. Today, you can watch all of this on Youtube.
Our boat remains loaded with several fly rods and one spinning rod. I’m not switching, just experimenting.
We are all really looking forward to the cool-down coming next week. It will be wet, but fishing should be good, mainly due to lower temperatures and cloud cover. It is going to be a lot more comfortable for us. Not today. It is going to be hot today, and sunny with high humidity.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
