Little River is flowing at 162 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.85 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 74 cfs. The water temperature is 67.8 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smoky Mountains, that have USGS gauge sites, are flowing above normal for this date.
Fly fishing in the Park is very good, thanks to the higher than normal flows. The streams are warm in the low elevations. Fish the mid to high elevations where the water is cooler. Rain may change the conditions for better or worse this week. There may be high or stained water at times. For the long haul, the expected rain this week will benefit us in October. Like September, October is usually dry.
We are accustomed to fishing under low flow conditions during the Fall. That has not been the case this year. Hopefully, the current trend will continue.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. Try foam beetles, a Yellow Neversink Caddis, Rob’s Hellbender, Yellow Stimulator, Smoky Mountain Candy, Parachute Adams, Green Weenie, Tellico Nymph, Bead Head Pheasant Tail, or about any reasonable dry fly or nymph. The trout are hungry and looking for food.
Presentation and stealth are more important than fly choices right now. Don’t let the trout see you and get a good drift. You will catch trout following these two important rules.
Jack and I will be fishing on one of the area lakes Tuesday, unless the forecast changes and thunderstorms are expected all day long. I’m not sure where we are going, but it will probably be an impoundment on the Little Tennessee River. We have been finding largemouth bass in the structure and the smallies have been scarce. Hopefully that will change. We like catching smallmouth bass.
It will be overcast most of the week. Lake fishing should be very good.
TVA is lowering the lakes, affecting the tailwaters below the dams. You might be able to squeeze in some wade fishing or boat fishing today on some tailwaters. Check the TVA website for generation schedules.
The lowland rivers are flowing above normal, and fishing or floating conditions should get even better this week. There is a chance we will get too much rain at times, temporarily raising and staining those rivers.
Today is order day for me. I will be ordering from companies that supply our fly tying department. I do that every week, to keep items in stock. The fly tying department is well stocked. When we are out of something, our supplier is usually out too.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
