Little River is flowing at 228 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.07 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 74 cfs. The record high flow for this date is 250 cfs, set in 1977. There is no doubt, Little River will far exceed that number today, setting a new record. Records have been kept at this gauge site for 55 years.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 511 cfs, compared to median flow of 141 cfs. The record over the past 68 years at this site, for todays date is 828 cfs. That record may be broken today.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 318 cfs, compared to median flow for this date of 197 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 130 cfs. Median flow for this date is 42 cfs. The record on this date there is 135 cfs, going back 74 years at this gauge site. The water is going up quickly, and should set a new record in a few minutes.
We are feeling the affects of Hurricane Michael, which is now a tropical storm. I don’t know if the track of the storm has moved west, but I was not expecting this, and believe me, I read a lot of weather forecasts each day when preparing to write this report. Maggie Valley is currently under a Tropical Storm Warning.
I just checked all the weather websites in our area again, and no flash flood watches have been listed so far. I would not rule that out today. We will probably get more rain and it may be heavy. It will be windy, especially in the higher elevations.
This is probably not a good day to go fly fishing in the Smokies. So far, no road closings have been reported in the Park. Flash floods are possible according to the National Weather Service. Wind gusts may reach or exceed 35 miles per hour. Rainfall may reach 2 inches or more. That has already happened in Townsend. I just checked again.
The good news is, it is going to be beautiful in Townsend and the Smoky Mountains tomorrow and Saturday. High temps tomorrow will reach only the low 60’s and dip to the mid 40’s at night. Sunday will be warmer with a low chance for rain. Rain is back in the forecast Monday and Tuesday.
OK, now we are under a “Flood Advisory” issued by the National Weather Service. I wondered when they were going to do that.
Unless our streams get blown out, fishing should be very good in the Smokies this weekend. We’ll have to wait and see what happens this morning.
Paula and I have been spending weeks, every year in the Florida Panhandle, fishing. As the devastation from the hurricane unfolded, we saw unbelievable destruction. Many buildings and marinas are places we recognize and visited over the years. We have friends who live in those towns. We know people who own some of those businesses. This happened so quickly, and the storm is much worse than any hurricane that has made landfall in the Panhandle.
I have yet to find out what has happened in our neighboring Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama.
I hope you are OK! I know a lot of you who read this report live in the path of this storm. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.
