Little River is flowing at 319 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.31 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 74 cfs. The water temperature is 58.6 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 880 cfs or 2.68 feet on the gauge. Median flow is 122 cfs. Flow today is a record for this date, that was set in 1928 at 509 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek and Oconaluftee River are both flowing above median flow, but not by much.
Fishing conditions are perfect in some streams. Little River looks great, flowing on the high side of good. You may find high water somewhere in the Little Pigeon drainage or possibly all of the tributaries there. It is hard to say.
Water temperatures in the low to upper elevations are good. Some very high streams may be chilly this morning. I was cold up high last night. It will be warmer tonight.
I think nymphs will work best, though dry flies may produce too. I would use Tellico, Prince, Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear or a Green Weenie as a sub surface fly. Others may work as well or better. If you want to try dry flies, a Yellow or Orange Stimulator would be a good choice.
We could not ask for more beautiful weather. It finally feels like Fall. Sunday and Monday will be a little warmer, then we will see cool temperatures again. We could not ask for better stream flows either. October is usually very dry and the streams are historically low. Rain is predicted on several days, now through October 27th.
We have had twice as much rain as we normally do, since September 1st, at the Knoxville Airport.
The leaf change in the lower elevations has not happened. Some trees are colorful, but not many. I remember some years when the Fall peak occurred in the second week of October. Not this year.
Today and tomorrow, are both excellent days to fish in the Smokies.
Paula and I will be working on the landscaping at the shop today. I will be washing windows too.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
