If the National Weather Service predictions are correct, the temperature tonight will be warmer at Mount Leconte, than it will be a Elkmont. The elevation at Mount Leconte is 6,593 feet, compared to the elevation of 2,200 feet at Elkmont. That could be due to a predicted temperature inversion, or just a wrong guess. The predicted temperature at Cherokee today looks somewhat high, compared to other areas too.
It is going to feel like Fall and we should see more trees turning this week and weekend.
Little River is flowing at 228 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.07 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. The water temperature is 62.1 degrees this morning
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 504 cfs, compared to median flow for this date of 116 cfs.
Oconaluftee River and Cataloochee Creek are both flowing above median flow.
Once again, fishing conditions in the Smokies are very good. We have better flows than normal in October, and the water temperatures are good at most elevations. Now that the water is cooler, you can opt to fish the low elevation streams and larger rivers. Pick one of all three prongs of Little River, and you should do well.
Fishermen are talking about catching rainbow trout in Townsend again. TWRA must have stocked the river a few days ago. Due to the abnormal high water temperatures in East Tennessee this fall, the stocking in the lowland rivers were delayed. I saw Little River in town several times yesterday. The flows are awesome for October. The river looks great.
I would hike into the backcountry, to get away from traffic, noise and people. Hike above Elkmont or to Lynn Camp Prong for something closer to solitude. There are a lot of people hiking on the trails, but that won’t be a negative for anglers.
Nymphs will definitely work for you. Dry flies might. It is going to be sunny today. I always do better with nymphs on sunny days. Try a Tellico, Hare’s Ear, Prince, Pheasant Tail or a Green Weenie. If you want to fish with dry flies, try a Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis or a Yellow or Orange Stimulator. If you are dry fly fishing, concentrate on the shaded areas of the stream you are fishing, or pick a smaller shaded stream in the backcountry.
The lakes are fishing well in shallow water on cloudy days. Or, you can go early or late when the sun is off the water. Surface temperatures are cooling so we may see more smallmouth bass in shallow water.
It is official. The black crappie caught in May in Loudon County is now a world record. The fish was caught in a pond by Lionel Ferguson. It weighed 5 pounds 7 ounces. You can see this fish on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE. That fish is a “pig”.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
