Little River is flowing at 178 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.91 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 73 cfs. The water temperature is 58.1 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 442 cfs, compared to median flow for this date of 114 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek and Ononaluftee River are both flowing above median flow.
Fishing is good in the Smoky Mountains. Fishing conditions are very good. We could not ask for better conditions in October. Flows and water temperatures are perfect.
Stealth, or staying hidden from the trout is essential to your success. Dress to blend with the forest. Stay low. Don’t wade more than you have to. Fish the choppy water, where you don’t see the trout and hopefully, they don’t see you. If you are seeing trout in water that is not broken or choppy, be sneaky and try to catch them.
Nymphs will work. Dry flies may work too. My nymph choices would be standard tried and true patterns, Tellico, Hare’s Ear, Prince, Pheasant Tail or Green Weenie. For dry flies I would use a Yellow or Orange Stimulator, Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis or Smoky Mountain Candy.
The long term weather forecast through November 1st looks awesome for Smokies fly fishing anglers. It will be cool, but not cold. It will be dry some days and rain on others. So far, rainfall in October is above normal. Rainfall in September, through mid October is way above normal. That is why our streams are in such good shape right now. That should continue at least through the end of the month.
We have been handed a gift!
The trees have not turned in the mid to low elevations, but they will soon. I can see some subtle changes even here in the valley. The colors are late. Everything is late this Fall. November and December are normally much wetter than October so we look forward to good fishing conditions through the end of the year.
I hope you can be here this month to enjoy our good fishing and Fly Tyers Weekend.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
