An inch of rain fell here yesterday. The mountains may have received even more rain. All streams in the Park rose to fairly high levels. Most peaked yesterday afternoon. They are receding now.
Little River is flowing at 299 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.26 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. The water temperature is 55.0 degrees this morning. We consider a gauge reading at 2.5 feet or slightly below, to be on the high side of good for fly fishing.
Little Pigeon River at Sevierville is flowing at 723 cfs or 2.49 feet on the gauge. Median flow there is 131 cfs for this date.
Other streams in the Park are flowing quite a bit above normal for late October. October is our driest month. This has been a wet year. Rainfall at the Knoxville Airport is 9.01 inches above normal for the year, as of today.
Water temperatures in the low to mid elevations are good, well within the trout’s preferred range. You will likely find colder water tomorrow morning. With the expected sun and warmer temperatures, fishing will probably be best later in the morning, until dark.
I would plan on fishing nymphs at low to mid elevations. Try Tellico, Pheasant Tail, Prince or Hare’s Ear patterns. You may see a hatch of blue wing olives, so be prepared for that. This is a perfect blue wing olive day. They love cold, misty days. Adult midges on the water are also a possibility.
Fly Tyers Weekend is here. The FREE event starts at 9 am. We have a huge tent erected right behind the shop where up to 20 fly tyers will be demonstrating at once. A total of 49 different fly tyers will be demonstrating today and tomorrow. They will rotate in 4-hour shifts throughout the weekend. All you have to do is show up.
Each tyer will be sitting at a table, with chairs on the other side for you to use. Watch, listen and ask questions about tying or fly fishing. You can learn from these folks. They are here from other states including Tennessee. Move around among the tyers. This is not a class. You can change tying stations throughout the day, both days.
The folks from Casting For Recovery (CFR) will be selling hot food, coffee and drinks both days. Look for the tent with the pink roof. This is one of their fundraisers. We have tables set up in the tent so you can sit down to eat.
CFR is a national non-profit organization that holds fly fishing retreats for breast cancer patients. They offer 60 retreats across the country, serving over 800 women each year. You can read more about CFR by CLICKING HERE.
You can make a donation to CFR at Fly Tyers Weekend. Paula and I will. I will be at FTW both days and I’m really looking forward to it.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
