Little River is flowing at 341 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.36 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 88 cfs. The water temperature is 52.3 degrees this morning. Though we got almost no rain in Townsend yesterday, the higher elevations must have. Little River did not recede much at all yesterday. A gauge reading of 2.5 feet or below is what we consider on the high side of good. The river is flowing a little below that number right now.
Little Pigeon river rose late yesterday and last night to 873 cfs or 2.68 feet on the Sevierville gauge.
Oconaluftee River did the same thing, rising to 649 cfs now. Flow there peaked this morning and the river is receding. Cattaloochee Creek rose slightly yesterday afternoon, but is now receding.
I think fishing will be fine today, especially in Little River and some other streams in the Park. Flows in Little River are good below the confluence. There is a chance one or more prongs may be flowing high, as well as some other streams in the Park. I would go and find angler friendly water to fish.
Water temperatures are good in the low to mid-elevations. Steams will warm through the day, unlike yesterday. If you had a slow fishing day yesterday, it was probably because the water temperature was falling. Maybe fishing was great. I didn’t hear any reports from returning anglers.
Nymphs will work best, unless you see a hatch, which could be blue wing olives. Be prepared for that. I would use my favorite nymphs, Prince, Tellico, Hare’s Ear or Pheasant Tail. I would add extra weight and get them down.
We had a great day at the shop yesterday. The store and the tent were packed with people due to the Fly Tyers Weekend going on. Some of us working there talked about the numbers of attendees that were there. That number only compared to the second time Lefty Kreh was here in the mid-2000’s and possibly one other Fly Tyers Weekend.
It was misty all day and chilly. Everyone seemed to have a great time. I didn’t get the chance to watch the fly tyers. I spent all day talking to old friends and making new ones. The tyers had plenty of people watching and talking to them most of the day.
We’re doing it again today. The Free event starts at 9 am. Just show up.
I’m going to finish this report, work out for an hour, shower then head to the shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
