Little River is flowing at 205 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.0 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 89 cfs. The water temperature is 55.9 degrees this morning, compared to 51 degrees at this time yesterday morning.
The water temperatures in the low elevations are fairly close to perfect, within the trout’s preferred range. The temperatures are probably good in the higher elevations.
Flows are excellent, much higher than normal in the Smokies this time of the year.
The problem today is going to be the wind. Much of the Park is under a wind advisory. Gusts to 25 miles per hour are predicted here in Townsend. Gusts as high as 50 miles per hour are predicted at Mount Leconte and 45 miles per hour at Newfound Gap.
Though fishing may be good, I would think about staying out of the forest, unless the wind dies down later today. You don’t want to be hit by a falling limb or tree.
I would wait and fish tomorrow. Conditions will be much better, unless heavy rain falls in some drainages. That does not seem too likely right now, but it could happen.
If you go, plan on using nymphs. I would add plenty of weight to get them down. You might want to fish with streamers, if you want to catch pre-spawn brown trout. Dry fly fishing is tough in the wind, but trout may take them. I would use an Orange Stimulator or Orange Caddis dry fly.
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and US Fish and Wildlife (USFW) have agreed to continue funding the trout stocking program, along with State Agencies in Tennessee and Georgia. This partnership began in 2013 after the federal agencies discussed pulling out of the stocking program. That would have left the burden on State Agencies alone.
A temporary deal was struck. Last year, 1.1 million trout were stocked in TVA waters by the partnership. Now, the partnership agreement has been extended to 2021.

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency also stock trout using their own funds, in tailwaters, lakes and lowland rivers.
This is good news. But, 2021 is not that far off. Hopefully the partnership will extend their agreement further in the future.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
