Little River is flowing at 303 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.27 feet on the flow gauge. The river is rising. Median flow for this date is 140 cfs. The water temperature is 57 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River at the Sevierville Gauge is rising. Currently, the reading is 616 cfs or 2.34 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 186 cfs.
Oconaluftee River and Cataloochee Creek are beginning to rise right now, slightly, so far.
I would stay out of the Smokies until this storm passes. The only road closed at this point is Highway 441 Newfound Gap Road. That road was closed late yesterday in anticipation of high winds. It is still closed. You can access the Park’s Road Twitter Page by CLICKING HERE. There you can determine whether any other roads are closed, or when Newfound Gap Road re-opens.
It is now 6:46 am. I am looking at the radar. It appears the worst of this storm is over on the Tennessee side of the Park. The storm could get worse again, so don’t count it out yet.
You may find high and stained water in some or all streams in the Smokies this morning. I don’t know how much rain fell in the Park. The turbidity reading at the Oconaluftee USGS Guage indicates almost clear water now. That could change.
Check the stream gauges in a few hours and make your decision about fishing in the Smokies today. Also, watch for road closings.
If the streams stabilize later, try nymphs or streamers. Watch for a blue wing olive hatch. That is possible today. Switch to dry lies or emergers if you see trout rising. Tomorrow may be a great day to fish but take a rain jacket with you, just in case.
More rain is likely later this week, with the highest chance on Friday. It will be sunny and cool Saturday and Sunday.
We finished re-stocking the fly tying department yesterday. After Fly Tyers Weekend, we were low on our out of many materials and hooks. Today, I will order again, to replenish what was sold after that weekend. It is a never ending cycle, re-stocking every week. I’m going to vote today too.
It is daybreak now. The wind is calm and light rain is coming down. I think it’s about over. Limbs are on the ground and our driveways. I’ll have to pick the big ones up before going to the shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
