Little River is flowing at 345 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.37 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 146 cfs. The water temperature at the low elevation gauge near Townsend is 45.5 degrees.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 716 cfs, 2.48 feet on the gauge, compared to median flow of 195 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 558 cfs, 1.96 feet on the gauge, compared to median flow of 242 cfs, at the Birdtown gauge. The water temperature there is a cold 43.2 degrees.
Cattaloochee Creek’s flow is 111 cfs compared to median flow of 51 cfs. The water temperature there is 40.5 degrees.
So, we have higher than normal flows, but most streams are not blown out. More rain tomorrow may change that, especially if we get an inch of rain.
Water temperatures are the problem this morning, with readings in the low to mid-40’s at most elevations, and possibly colder in the high elevations. The temperatures are still falling at this time and will for a while.
It will be sunny today. The streams may warm some later. I would wait a while before going. I think fishing will be slow this morning but hopefully at least fair later today.
Plan on fishing with weighted nymphs. Get them down near the stream bed. The trout will be hunkered down early, and maybe all day. You could try all kinds of nymph patterns, but my choices are always, Pheasant Tail, Tellico, Prince or Hare’s Ear.
You may see a blue wing olive hatch. If you do, watch for trout rising to them. If they are, switch to a BWO dry fly, emerger, or both. A small Pheasant Tail nymph may work as a dropper, if you don’t have an emerger pattern. It may not happen, but it could.
The Missing Link of the Foothills Parkway opened to traffic for the first time yesterday. Thousands of visitors drove the road and enjoyed the beautiful views. CLICK HERE to visit the Daily Times website to learn more and see some beautiful photos from the Parkway.
Today will be another busy day on the road. Though we have snow in the high elevations, all roads in the Park are open this morning, including Foothills Parkway. Don’t forget about the older stretch from Walland to Chilhowee Lake. Drive the entire 33 miles. Plan on spending two or three hours, because you will want to stop and take in the beauty at the pull-offs. Traffic may be heavy and moving slow.
Today is Veterans Day. Today we honor those who severed and currently serve in our military. Veterans Day is always celebrated on November 11th. World War I ended on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month. The war officially ended with an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations, in 1918.
Thank you to all who served. I served. Many of my friends in my age group did. We came of age during the Viet Nam war.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
